CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Despite an exceptional effort from the Tigers' defense, the Towson University field hockey team fell to No. 8 Virginia, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Lena Vandam put on an impressive performance in net, registering a career-high 21 saves. The Tigers' defense also collected five defensive stops thanks to Kasey Bubel, Beira Ho and Paige Reese.
The Cavaliers scored just before the first quarter expired before finding the back of the net twice in the third.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia got down the field quickly to start the game, registering its first penalty corner and shot just over a minute into play. Vandam earned her first save of the game.
- UVA kept possession for most of the quarter and with just over a minute left cashed in on its second of two consecutive corners to take an early 1-0 lead.
- Despite the score, Towson played solid defense throughout the first 15:00, denying 13 of the 14 Cavalier shots and five of six corners.
- The Tigers successfully defended four early corners to keep the score at 1-0 in the second. The team went on to bat away three more in the quarter.
- The black & gold saw their first opportunities in the Cavalier's defensive zone, but could not find the back of the net.
- Towson's backline defended a game-high 17 shots in the second quarter to keep the game within reach. Bubel produced two clutch defensive saves in the quarter.
- The star of the Tigers' defensive effort however was Vandam, who ended the first half with 12 saves.
- UVA came out hard in the second half, but once again the Towson defense stood strong, getting a defensive save from Ho early.
- The Cavaliers converted on a hard hit from the top of the circle to extend their lead to 2-0.
- Towson flipped the field and kept possession for a longer period that it had seen prior, but could not convert.
- Vandam and her defense continued to bat away balls and the goalkeeper had her best 15:00 span of the contest, earning eight saves.
- After the ball got stuck in Vandam's pads, a penalty stroke was accessed. Taryn Tkachuk found a hole and Virginia took the 3-0 edge.
- The Tigers' offense threatened more in the fourth quarter but still could not break through to score.
- The back & gold continued their tough defensive stance to allow no goals on nine shots.
- Vandam let nothing go by in the final span and stopped six shots.
BEYOND THE BOX
- Vandam set a new career high with an impressive 21 saves. Her previous high was 13 which she earned against James Madison in the spring 2021 season. The Towson single-game save record is 34.
- UVA ended the contest with 53 shots. Only three of those made it through the defense to find the back of the net.
- Virginia also attempted 23 penalty corners to only convert on a single one.
- Bubel collected her second and third defensive saves of the season so far. Ho also earned her first duo of defensive stops this season. Paige Reese also added her first career defensive save.
- In addition, Reese registered the loan shot for the Tigers, putting a hit on frame in the second quarter.

Towson will return to its home pitch for a pair of games against California and Rider. The Tigers will take on the Bears on Friday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. and the Broncos Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.
