TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team went against the Elon Phoenix this afternoon. The Tigers (19-1, 9-1 CAA) defeated Elon (7-11, 4-4 CAA) in four sets 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 25-17.
Key Stats vs Elon:
- Towson held the Phoenix to a .084 hit percentage, including a -0.121 in the fourth set.
- The Tigers registered a season-high 19 blocks, including five solo blocks.
- Towson had nine service aces for the fifth time this season.
- Towson totaled 45 assists for the third time this year.
How It Happened vs Elon:
- Towson jumped out to a 5-1 lead behind two kills from Victoria Barrett. Elon got within one point, then the Tigers responded with a 9-2 run to take a 14-6 lead.
- The teams went back and forth, with the Phoenix reducing their deficit to six, but Towson sealed the first set with a 6-2 run to win the set 25-15 on a Nina Cajic kill.
- The second set started with Elon having a small lead, then Towson went on a 11-1 run to take a 16-8 lead with Barrett having three kills and Fay Bakodimou having two.
- The Tigers were able to win the second set 25-17 after going back and forth with the Phoenix for the rest of the set. Katie McCracken secured the set win with a service ace.
- Towson got out to an 8-4 lead behind Bakodimou's three kills to start the third set. The Phoenix went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-9 lead, then the Tigers scored four unanswered points to have a 13-10 advantage.
- Towson maintained the lead until a 7-1 run by Elon gave the Phoenix a 22-18 advantage. The Tigers countered with a 5-1 run to be tied at 23, but the Phoenix got two kills to win the set 25-23.
- Towson started the fourth set with a 9-3 lead behind two kills from Bakodimou. Elon responded with a 7-1 run to tie the score at ten.
- The Tigers countered with a 9-3 run behind four blocks to take control of the set and have a 19-13 lead. The teams exchanged points, then Towson sealed the win with a 4-1 run, with Barrett having two kills during that span.
Inside the Numbers vs Elon:
- Fay Bakodimou had a team-high and season-high 16 kills to lead the offense today. Bakodimou added nine digs and three aces to have six straight matches with an ace.
- Victoria Barrett had 14 kills, eight digs, three block assists and one ace.
- Lydia Wiers had a season-high nine total blocks that included two solo blocks. Wiers had a season-high two aces and four digs.
- Aayinde Smith registered six block assists and surpassed 100 career total blocks. Smith also had five kills on a .625 hit percentage.
- Rachel Hess totaled a team-best 17 digs and six assists.
- Sarah Jordan totaled 20 assists, surpassing 400 assist, six digs and one ace, while Katie McCracken had 17 assists, nine digs and two aces.
