BOX SCORE TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team faced off against the William & Mary Tribe this afternoon. The Tigers (21-1, 10-1 CAA) battled for a four-set victory against the Tribe (11-8, 6-5 CAA) 25-23, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19.
Key Stats vs William & Mary:
- Towson held the Tribe to a .097 hit percentage, including a -0.025 percentage in the final set.
- Towson totaled 56 kills to have 50 or more kills in three of the last four matches.
- The Tigers registered 15 blocks for the second straight match and have totaled double-digit blocks in four consecutive matches.
- Towson had four service aces compared to two by William & Mary.
- The Tigers tallied 55 assists for the second time in a row.
How It Happened vs William & Mary:
- The Tribe jumped out to a 9-6 lead behind Kaitlyn Ferguson's three kills. The teams went back and forth until Towson scored three straight points to tie the set at 15 apiece.
- The teams remained tied at 17, then William & Mary gained a 21-18 lead. The Tigers soon were able to tie the score at 22, but the Tribe closed out the set on a 3-1 run to take the first set 25-23.
- Towson got a 9-6 lead to start the second set, then the Tigers scored five unanswered points to take a 14-6 lead. The teams traded points, with William & Mary closing the gap to six twice, but the Tigers finished the second set with three consecutive points to take the set 25-16.
- Towson earned a 9-5 lead to open the third set behind five kills from five different Tigers. Towson scored four of the next five points, with Victoria Barrett having three kills in that span to give the Tigers a 14-8 advantage.
- William & Mary was able to reduce their deficit to 17-13, but Towson responded with three straight, including a Morgan Wilson ace, to have a 20-13 lead. The Tribe brought the deficit back to four, but the Tigers answered with three consecutive points again to earn set point. William & Mary scored two points before Irbe Lazda's emphatic kill sealed the third set 25-19 to give Towson a 2-1 advantage in the match.
- The fourth set started with both teams going back and forth, then the Tribe opened up a 12-8 lead behind a 5-1 run. The Tigers remained in striking distance of the Tribe until four straight points gave Towson a 19-18 lead, their second lead of the set.
- William & Mary tied the set at 19, but six unanswered points behind four attack errors gave the Tigers the fourth set 25-19 and the match victory.
Inside the Numbers vs William & Mary:
- Irbe Lazda had a career-high eight blocks with 11 kills and a season-high five digs this afternoon.
- Victoria Barrett finished with a team-high 14 kills with two digs and one assist. Barrett tallied three block assists for the four consecutive match.
- Katie McCracken put up team-best 27 assists with five digs.
- Sarah Jordan finished with 26 assists for the fourth time this season. Jordan added five digs and two aces to extend her streak to five matches with an ace.
- Lydia Wiers led all Tigers with nine total blocks for the second time in the last three matches. Wiers also contributed eight kills and three digs.
- Nina Cajic registered ten kills to surpass 500 total kills at Towson. Cajic had a .368 hit percentage and three digs.
- Aayinde Smith totaled eight kills on a team-high .429 hit percentage and added four total blocks.
- Rachel Hess had a team-best 16 digs and reached 200 assists at Towson.
- Towson is 10-0 at SECU Arena and picked up their 10th CAA victory this season.
