Volleyball Advances to CAA Semifinals, Defeats Stony Brook in Four

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team went against #8 seed Stony Brook Seawolves today. The Tigers (27-1, 14-1 CAA) were victorious against the Seawolves (10-16, 5-11 CAA) in four sets 25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19.

  • Towson totaled 12 blocks compared to six for Stony Brook.
  • The Tigers held Stony Brook to a zero hit percentage in the first and fourth sets.
  • Victoria Barrett led the Tigers in both kills (16) and digs (15).
 
How It Happened vs Stony Brook:
  • Towson opened the first set with an 8-2 run. The Seawolves were able to cut the deficit to 11-7, but the Tigers went on a 5-1 run to have a 16-8 lead.
  • Towson strengthened their lead with a 4-1 that was highlighted by a Fay Bakodimou ace. Stony Brook put up a fight to close out the set, but Bakodimou's kill sealed the first set 25-17.
  • Stony Brook started the second set with its own 8-2 run. The Tigers cut the lead down to four, but the Seawolves responded with a 4-1 run to own a 16-9 lead. The teams traded points until the Seawolves won the second set 25-17.
  • The Seawolves jumped out to a 5-2 lead, then the Tigers tied the score at six after a 4-1 run that included two kills from Victoria Barrett. Stony Brook gained a small lead and maintained the lead until Towson went on a 7-1 run led by Bakodimou's three kills to take an 18-15 advantage.
  • Stony Brook tied the set at 21 after a 5-2 run. Towson scored consecutive points to take a 23-21 lead, but the Seawolves responded with two points themselves to tie the score again. The Tigers won the set after an Irbe Lazda kill and a Stony Brook attack error gave Towson a 25-23 set win.
  • The Seawolves gained an early, but Towson scored six consecutive points to take a 10-6 lead. Stony Brook tied the match at 14 after three straight points.
  • Towson countered with four consecutive points to have an 18-14 lead. Stony Brook brought the lead to one after three points in a row that included back-to-back aces.
  • The Tigers ended the match on a 7-2 run with Victoria Barrett scoring two of the last three points to secure the set 25-19.
 
Inside the Numbers vs Stony Brook:
  • Victoria Barrett tied a career-high in kills with 16 and added 15 digs to earn her fifth double-double. Barrett added one ace and one total block.
  • Fay Bakodimou registered double-digit kills for the seventh time this season with ten kills. Bakodimou added four total blocks and one ace.
  • Rachel Hess had 14 digs extending her streak of double-digit digs to ten matches.
  • Katie McCracken totaled a team-high 18 assists, while Trinity Burge had a season-high 16 assists with six digs and two aces.
  • Four Tigers registered four or more blocks this afternoon, with Aayinde Smith leading the way with seven.

Towson will face #4 Northeastern tomorrow afternoon in the CAA Semifinals at SECU Arena at 4 p.m.
