Volleyball Cruises to Sweep over Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team squared off against the Charleston Cougars this afternoon at TD Arena. The Tigers (24-1, 13-1 CAA) sweep the Cougars (12-15, 7-7 CAA) 25-19, 25-18, 25-23.
 
Key Stats vs Charleston:
  • Towson finished with 42 kills on a .296 hit percentage, including .393 percentage in the first set.
  • The Tigers finished with 9.5 blocks, including six in the first set.
  • Towson held the Cougars to a .145 hit percentage with a .024 percentage in the first set.
  • Towson had eight service aces compared to four for Charleston.
 
How It Happened vs Charleston:
  • Towson jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the first set. The teams traded points to 8-5, then the Tigers went on an 8-1 run to have a 16-6 lead, which included two aces by Fay Bakodimou.
  • The teams went back and forth maintaining a double-digit lead for Towson, but Charleston scored six consecutive points to make the score 22-17. The Tigers closed out the first set with kills from Lydia Wiers and Victoria Barrett to win 25-19.
  • The Cougars came out to start the second set with a 7-3 run, but Towson responded with a 5-1 run to tie the score at eight. The Tigers went on an 11-3 run to take control of the set 19-11, including three kills and one ace from Barrett.
  • Towson maintained a constant lead until they faced match point where the Cougars were able to score three straight points to make the score 24-18, but Barrett's ninth kill sealed the second set for the Tigers 25-18.
  • The teams started the third set going back and forth with the score tied at ten. The Tigers earned a 12-11 lead behind kills from Nina Cajic and Irbe Lazda, but the Cougars scored five straight points to earn a 16-12 lead.
  • Towson reduced the deficit to 17-16 after a 4-1 run, but Charleston responded with four consecutive points to gain a 21-16 lead. The Tigers won the set and the match after a 9-2 run that included back-to-back aces from Barrett to secure the 24th win of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers vs Charleston:
  • Victoria Barrett led the Tiger offense with 15 kills on .429 hit percentage with three service aces. Barrett also added seven digs and two solo blocks.
  • Fay Bakodimou finished with a team-high four aces for the second time in the last three matches. Bakodimou had three total blocks for the third consecutive match and added four digs.
  • Sarah Jordan totaled 19 assists with seven digs, while Katie McCracken had 14 assists and one ace.
  • Aayinde Smith had a team-best four total blocks and finished with nine kills on .900 hit percentage.
  • The Tigers earned its 13th CAA win, the most since they went undefeated in the CAA in 2019.
  • Towson gained its 15th sweep of the season with eight of those sweeps coming in CAA play.
