AUSTIN, TEXAS – The #8 seed Towson University volleyball team faced off against the Georgia Bulldogs in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament this evening. The Tigers (29-2) were defeated in four sets by the Bulldogs (23-7) 10-25, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25.
With that defeat, Towson's 2022 season comes to a close. The Tigers have totaled a 90-11 record over the last four seasons that have earned Towson four consecutive CAA Championships.
Key Stats vs Georgia:
- Towson compiled 44 assists for the second straight match.
- The Tigers finished with 49 kills in back-to-back matches.
- Victoria Barrett finished with her sixth double-double of the season with ten kills and ten digs.
How It Happened vs Georgia:
- The Bulldogs started the match with a 15-4 run to take control of the first set. The Tigers tried to fight back, but the Bulldogs were too much and took the first set 25-10.
- Georgia jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second to open the second set. The Tigers responded with a 7-1 run that included five kills by Irbe Lazda to trail by one.
- The Bulldogs extended their lead to 14-11, but Towson countered with a 9-1 run to have a 20-15 advantage. Georgia fought back with a 7-1 run to take a 22-21 lead.
- The Tigers were able to tie the score at 23 after an attack error by Georgia, but the Bulldogs scored back-to-back points to take the second set 25-23.
- The third set started with both teams going back and forth, with Towson gaining an 8-6 advantage. Georgia tied the set at 11, but the Tigers went on an 8-3 run to have a 19-14 edge. The Bulldogs tried to fight back, but Victoria Barrett and Fay Bakodimou were able to seal a 25-21 victory.
- Georgia opened the fourth set with a 7-3 run. The teams went back and forth, but the Bulldogs stretched out their lead to 16-9. The teams continued to trade points, then Towson went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to two, capped off by a Bakodimou ace. Georgia closed out the set and won the set 25-20 to win the match.
Inside the Numbers vs Georgia:
- Irbe Lazda finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Nina Cajic had 11 kills on a .320 hit percentage.
- Sarah Jordan had a team-best 21 assists and six digs, while Katie McCracken totaled 15 assists and seven digs.
- Lydia Wiers finished with a team-high eight blocks to end her Towson career with 426 blocks to rank sixth all-time in program history.
- Towson tied the program record for the fewest losses in a season with two.
The Tigers finished with the best win percentage in program history with a .935 win percentage.
