Towson Baseball Falls in Saturday Doubleheader to No. 25 Miami

MIAMI – The Towson University baseball team returned to Mark Light Field to take on the No. 25 team in the country, falling to the Hurricanes 11-2 and 13-2 in the two contests.

Towson (0-3) led early in game two of the doubleheader but could not hold off Miami (3-0) in the games.

Key Stats:
  • On the hitting side, Burke Camper hit safely in both games, going 2-for-7 with a walk.  Burke Camper notched a solo home run in game one, also hitting safely in the doubleheader for a combined 2-for-5 day.
  • In game one, the loss went to Towson starter Nate Nabholz (0-1), who struck out five in three innings and surrendered three runs.  Dealing with a rain delay, Teddy Blumenauer (0-1) got the loss as the starter in game two with 3.2 innings thrown, having five strikeouts and six runs.
  • For Miami, Lorenzo Carrier had a pair of multi-hit contests, combining to go 4-for-8 with a home run, three runs and three RBI. Carson Palmquist (1-0) won game one, throwing five frames with a run and seven strikeouts.  Jake Garland (1-0) took the second game, throwing six innings with two runs and eight strikeouts in his start.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Nate Nabholz began the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the first.  But in the second, a solo home run by Dorian Gonzalez made it 1-0 Miami.
  • Miami got the bats going in the bottom of the third, piecing together a single and two doubles for two runs and a 3-0 lead.
  • Towson finally broke the All-American pitcher on the mound in the top of the fifth as Burke Camper sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a solo shot to pull Towson within two.
  • Next inning, Towson picked up second and third with one out.  Bryce Frederick hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Chandler Castleberry and make it 3-2 Miami after five-and-a-half.
  • That would be as close as Towson would get as Miami scored a combined eight runs in their last three innings at the plate to win game one 11-2.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • The game began with a pair of rain delays, with only one-half inning being played in the first hour.  Once the game resumed, Teddy Blumenauer held down the Hurricanes in the first two innings scoreless.
  • In the top of the third, Casey Bishop his a one-out single, took second on a passed ball, went to third on a Castleberry single then scored on a James Moses sacrifice fly. Towson led 1-0.
  • Miami scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.  Next half-inning, Towson got the bases loaded with one out.  Nick Brown grounded out to short to bring home Burke Camper and get Towson within one at 3-2.
  • Miami added to its lead with three runs scored in the bottom of the fourth, adding another in the fifth, to go up 7-2.
  • Doug Marose held off Miami with a scoreless sixth, but Towson could not muster up any more runs.  Miami scored six in its final two frames at bat and won 13-2.
