Late Push Falls Short for Men’s Lacrosse on the Road

PHILADELPHIA – A late flurry of goals for the Towson University men's lacrosse team came up just short as the Tigers fell 11-8 on the road at Saint Joseph's University Friday afternoon at Sweeney Field in Philadelphia.

Towson (3-4) was led by a four-point effort from James Avanzato, who netted a hat trick alongside an assist. Jonathan Bender had a season-best two goals and one assist for three points. Evan Long, making his first career start, stopped 14 Saint Joseph's shots.

Saint Joseph's (5-2) capitalized on a hot start early, out-scoring the Tigers 6-1 in the first 30 minutes. Matt Bohmer led the Hawks with four points on three goals and one assist. Carter Page added a hat trick for the Hawks as Zach Cole won 13 of his 17 faceoffs.

How it Happened
  • After both teams traded chances early in the first quarter, Saint Joseph's struck first nearly six minutes in on Anderson's first of the day. The Hawks continued the run with three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the first quarter. Bohmer scored before Page scored back-to-back goals two minutes apart. The host Hawks took a 4-0 lead at the 15 minute break.
  • Towson's defense settled in for the second quarter; after letting in the Hawks' fifth of the day three minutes into the period, the Tigers locked down and held Saint Joseph's off the board until Bohmer scored at the 3:30 mark.
  • Avanzato scored with 30 seconds left in the first half to stop the Hawks' six-goal run. Alex Reid had the assist as Towson trailed 6-1 heading into the locker room at the break.
  • A minute into the second half, Austin Strazzulla scored to put the Hawks up 7-1. Page followed six seconds later for his third goal of the day.
  • Towson snapped the Hawks' small run as Nick DeMaio launched his first of the day at 8:27 of the third quarter, depositing a feed from Jonathan Bender, cutting the Hawk lead to 8-2.
  • The Tigers pulled back to 8-3 as Avanzato potted his second of the day getting a feed from Chop Gallagher. But Saint Joseph's answered with 5:55 to play in the third on a Strazzulla goal.
  • Towson strung together three in a row, beginning at 4:51 on a Bender tally before linemate Josh Webber scored 90 seconds later to make it a four-goal, 9-5 ball game.
  • DeMaio deposited his second of the day at 1:03 of the fourth, cutting the Hawk lead back to three at 9-6.
  • The final minute was a flurry of goals as the Hawks pushed their lead up to 11-6 with back-to-back strikes 40 seconds apart. Towson scored two late goals from Bender and Avanzato, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell 11-8.
