Merlo's Career Day Leads Women's Lacrosse Over Georgetown, 11-7

TOWSON, Md. – With a career-high 16 saves, Goalkeeper Carly Merlo helped to power the Towson University women's lacrosse team to a 11-7 win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.  

Despite one tie in the first quarter, the Tigers never trailed in the contest, staying in front for all but 1:35 of action.  

Blair Pearre led the team with four goals while Kerri Liucci recorded a season-high of three goals. Kerri Thornton also secured two goals while Kaitlin Thornton and Gabby Garrett added a score each.  

Pearre, the former Under Armour All-American, has now scored at least two goals in 27 of 31 games at the collegiate level. She now has 93 career goals to crack the program's top 20 scoring list at No. 19, tied with Jess Dunn.  

With her first goal in six games, Kaitlin Thornton also moved up to take sole possession of 16th place on the all-time top 20 scoring list with 97 goals.

How it Happened   

  • Towson came out fast, scoring three consecutive goals to take the 3-0 edge. Kerri Liucci, Kerri Thornton and Blair Pearre all found the back of the net.  
  • Georgetown answered with a three-score run of its own to tie it up, 3-all. Liucci added one more score to end the first quarter and put the Tigers ahead, 4-3.  
  • The Black & Gold carried the momentum into the second, as Pearre and Liucci scored to give Towson the 6-3 lead. With the score, Liucci recorded her first hat trick of the season and the third of her career.  
  • The Hoyas found the back of the net once before the Tigers pounced to go on a two-goal spurt and end the opening half up, 8-4.
  • Towson out-scored Georgetown 3-1 in the second quarter.  
  • The Hoyas began the third with a goal, but the Black & Gold answered with a pair of scores from Garrett and Pearre to go into the final quarter with the 10-5 advanatge. .  
  • Georgetown rallied to find the back of the net twice and cut the deficit to three goals to open the fourth, but it was not enough. Kaitlin Thornton sealed the victory with a score at the 7:30 mark to give the Tigers the 11-7 win.  

Key Stats 

  • Merlo had a huge day in net for the Black & Gold with a career-high 16 saves. Her previous high of 13 stops was against Drexel last season (May 7). 
  • Merlo also paced the team with six ground balls. Liucci and Olivia Malamphy also picked up six ground balls a piece.  
  • Lindsay Clarke played well behind the cage, tallying two assists. She has now recorded helpers in four consecutive games.  
  • Milana Zizakovic led the Black & Gold with a career-high seven draw controls while Kerri Thornton added two. Zizakovic has reached her previous career best of six draws twice, last against Penn State (March 15).  
  • Liucci, Zizakovic and Pearre each recorded one caused turnover. 

Inside the Numbers    

  • With one draw control on Saturday, Pearre now sits seventh all-time with 122 career draws. She is now seven behind Nikki Marcinik with 129. 
  • With 97 career goals, Kaitlin Thornton is just three scores away from becoming the 15th Tiger to reach the century mark in program history. Blair Pearre follows closely behind with 93 career goals.
