Towson Softball Falls in CAA Opening Weekend Doubleheader at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Towson University softball team got out to an early 5-2 lead against 2021 College World Series participant JMU in game one but fell in each contest of the doubleheader 14-5 (5) and 17-8 (6) to begin Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.

Towson (9-15, 0-2 CAA) had a 5-2 lead through the first two-and-a-half innings of the first contest, but JMU (10-13, 2-0 CAA) scored the final 12 runs of that game.  The Tigers scored first again in game two, but JMU got the next 10.  Towson looked to rally with seven runs combined in the fourth and fifth, but could not overcome its deficit.

Key Stats:
  • Gracyn Houmis hit safely in both games, including going 3-for-3 in game one, combining to hit 4-for-6 with a run and two RBI.  Mackenzie Lake finished 3-for-6 with a walk and two RBI while Cori Jones was 1-for-3 in each game, driving in a run each game.
  • Towson's starting pitchers got the defeats: Julia Jackson (6-6) got the defeat in game one, having 11 runs and two strikeouts in four innings, while Melissa Abrahamian (3-7) had the loss in game two with seven runs in the opening inning.
  • For JMU, Hannah Shifflett combined to go 4-for-5 with four walks, five runs and six RBI.  Alissa Humphrey (6-7) won both games, throwing nine combined innings with 11 runs and nine strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Nicole Kidwiler singled and took second on a wild pitch to begin the first inning.  Two batters later, Mackenzie Lake drove her in with a single to center and a 1-0 Towson lead.
  • In the top of the second, Towson got a hit to put a runner on second.  Emma Armstrong singled to left, allowing Cori Jones to score and making it 2-0 Tigers.
  • JMU tied the game at two in the bottom of the second.  With two away, Towson loaded the bases in the third.  Houmis slapped a single to left for two runs, then Jones followed with an RBI double to push Towson up 5-2.
  • JMU got three runs in the third, six in the fourth and third in the fifth to walk off with the 14-5 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • Kidwiler reached on an error and got to third on a wild pitch.  Briana Ramirez hit an infield single to bring in Kidwiler for a 1-0 Towson advantage.
  • JMU combined for 10 runs in the first three innings.  Towson got the bats going in the top of the fourth, starting with first and second with two out.  Kidwiler notched a single back up the middle, then Ramirez doubled to left-center to bring in two more.  A Lake RBI single completed the four-run fourth to pull Towson within five at 10-5 JMU.
  • After two more runs for the Dukes in the fourth, again the two-out hitting for Towson came through.  With two runners in scoring position, Jones singled up the middle to bring in a run.  Armstrong followed by reaching on an error, allowing two runs to score as the score stood at 12-8 JMU.
