TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team opened at home with a 5-1 victory over local rival UMBC to begin its homestand, not allowing an earned run on the afternoon.
Towson (3-10) scored in five different innings for the victory over UMBC (5-7) in the first mid-week game of the year.
Key Stats:
- Two Tigers earned three-hit afternoons, led by Max Samson, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a steal. James Moses finished 3-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and a steal.
- Ethan Pecko had his collegiate debut, going a scoreless first inning with a strikeout. Nick Ramanjulu (1-2) entered in relief and threw six strong innings, allowing only an unearned run and striking out four. Cam Clark picked up his second save of the year with two flawless innings in relief.
- For UMBC, Justin Taylor and Myles Nicholson each had two hits on the day. Starter Reid Celata (0-1) got the loss, going 3.2 innings with two runs and three strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- The game started as a pitching duel, with neither side scoring in the opening two frames.
- In the bottom of the third, Towson picked up first and second with two out. Max Samson hit a laser up the middle for an RBI single, sending Bryce Frederick home for the 1-0 Tigers lead.
- Nick Ramanjulu held UMBC down through the fourth inning. Towson added a run in the fourth: Jacob Terao doubled to left-center then got home on a pair of groundouts to send Towson to a 2-0 lead.
- UMBC scored in the top of the fifth on an error to pull within one. Towson got it back in the same frame on a Danny Becerra sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Towson.
- Next inning, another sacrifice fly, this one by Elijah Dickerson, pushed Towson up 4-1.
- Towson added insurance in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on the corners and two out, Dickerson drew a throw and stole second, while Chandler Castleberry took home to make the score 5-1 Towson. Cam Clark went 1-2-3 in the ninth to finish the game as Towson won 5-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- This is the second game where Towson has allowed just one run this season, the other being the 11-1 victory over Southern on Feb. 26.
- Towson has won four straight games against UMBC dating back to 2019.

Towson gets set for its first home weekend of the season, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m.
