TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team fell to UMBC 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon as both teams honored those who are fighting and those who have lost their battles with cancer for the Strike Out Cancer Game.
Towson (13-26) and UMBC (24-7) held a pregame ceremony, along the Red Devils organization, to support and honor those fighting cancer. For more information on the Red Devils and their support of breast cancer families, visit https://www.the-red-devils.org/.

How It Happened:
- Nicole Kidwiler gave the Tigers a great chance to take a quick lead when she led off with a triple to right field. But, UMBC pitcher Kya Matter pitched out of trouble as she struck out the next two hitters and retired Chloe Poulich on a grounder to second.
- In the next half-inning with one out, shortstop Casey Turner gave the Retrievers a 1-0 lead when she belted her third home run of the season over the left field fence.
- In the third, UMBC extended its lead to 3-0 when Karly Keating doubled with one out. Then, Megan Keating blasted her fourth homer of the season.
- Matter left the game after pitching three shutout innings. She was replaced by Gillian McCarthy. The Tigers responded with a rally. Poulich led off with a single and went to second base on a wild pitch. Catcher Madyson Peters followed with a double to drive in the Tigers' first run. Peters was replaced by Elizabeth Yoskowitz at second. She moved to third on an infield out. When Sydni Byers hit a ground ball to shortstop, Yoskowitz beat the throw to the plate to make it a 3-2 game. But McCarthy worked her way out of the inning.
- UMBC got a run back in the top of the fifth inning. Courtney Coppersmith hit a two-out double and advanced to third via single. Anna Lonchar singled up the middle to bring in Coppersmith for a 4-2 advantage.
- Towson had a late rally in the seventh, with back-to-back two-out singles by Briana Ramirez and Mackenzie Lake, but a fly out ended the game as UMBC got the win 4-2.
