CATONSVILLE, Md. – Despite a two-run opening inning, the Towson University baseball team fell at UMBC 12-3 on Wednesday.
Towson (10-30) mustered nine hits and nine walks in the game against Baltimore County rival UMBC (17-22) but fell in the rescheduled mid-week game in Catonsville.
Key Stats:
- Jack McLaughlin earned a pair of extra base hits via home run and double to go 2-for-5 with two runs. Danny Becerra was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI while Elijah Dickerson was 2-for-5 with an RBI.
- Starter Teddy Blumenauer went an inning with two runs and two strikeouts for a no decision. The next pitcher, Doug Marose (2-2), had three runs and two strikeouts in two innings.
- For UMBC, Luke Trythall reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, three runs and an RBI. Starter Joe Pucek did not decision with two runs and a strikeout in the first inning, while reliever Owen Hamilton (1-2) got the victory with two innings, a run and two strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Towson got out to a fast start in the opening frame, getting two runners in scoring position with one out. An Elijah Dickerson RBI ground out followed by a Danny Becerra RBI single put Towson up 2-0.
- UMBC also got early production in the first, loading the bases up with two outs. An infield single then bases loaded walk tied the game at 2-2.
- Next inning, Myles Nicholson hit a solo home run to push UMBC ahead. Towson countered the next half-inning with its own solo home run from Jack McLaughlin for a 3-3 tied score.
- UMBC got back the lead in the bottom of the third. With two in scoring position and two out, Drew Roberts hit a single back up the middle to bring in two and make it 5-3 UMBC. The Retrievers added another on a throwing error in the fourth to go up 6-3.
- Towson got second and third with two out in the fifth, but a fly out retired the side before any runs could go across. UMBC scored two more with a fielder's choice and RBI single.
- Again in the seventh, Towson put two runners on but could not score. Another throwing error in the bottom half of the inning allowed a runner to score for UMBC for a 9-3 Retrievers advantage.
- Towson continued to get runners in scoring position but could not plate runs. UMBC added three more in the eighth to win 12-3.
