TOWSON, Md. – Former Towson University standout
Shane Simpson has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League (CFL), joining the defending Grey Cup champion.
Simpson will play in the CFL for the first time. While at Towson from 2015-19, the Easton, Pennsylvania native earned several honored, including being a 2018 All-American as an all-purpose player by the
Associated Press, HERO Sports, AFCA, STATS FCS and Athlon Sports. He also was a four-time All-CAA player, including three times in 2018 at running back, kick returner and punt returner.
Simpson amassed 1,925 rushing yards, 4,751 all-purpose yards and 21 total touchdowns in his Towson career, surpassing the 2,000-yard rushing yard mark and 5,000-yard all-purpose mark after a year at Virginia in 2020.
Winnipeg won the 108
th Grey Cup in 2021, finishing first place in the West Division with an 11-3 record. The Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-25 in overtime in the Grey Cup on Dec. 12, 2021. Winnipeg has the most CFL championships with 12, including the last two.
Simpson is the newest Towson Tiger to join the CFL. During the 2021 season, four former Tigers were on CFL rosters:
Tibo Debaillie and
Malik Tyne played for the Edmonton Elks while Frank Beltre and Tom Flacco were signed by the Ottawa Redblacks.
