ELON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team lit up the scoreboard against its North Carolina foe, taking down the Phoenix 12-6 to even up the road series.
With the game tied 1-1 after one, Towson (12-37, 2-17 CAA) earned a seven-run second inning and scored four more in the fourth frame. The Towson bullpen held Elon (24-23, 8-11 CAA) to one run in the final six innings en route to the win.
Key Stats:
- Towson had three different players hit home runs in the game. Jack McLaughlin was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, two runs, four RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Chandler Castleberry also had a three-run homer, finishing 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs and a stolen base. Burke Camper had Towson's first home run, a two-run blast, going 1-for-5.
- Towson starter Nick Janowicz pitched two-and-two-thirds with five runs and a strikeout. The victory went to Max Simpson (3-0), who threw two innings with a run and two strikeouts. Brett Seils notched the save, throwing the final four innings scoreless with four strikeouts.
- For Elon, Luke Stephenson hit 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, two runs and four RBI. Starter Brian Edgington (6-4) got the loss, surrendering eight runs in one-and-two-thirds, striking out two.
How It Happened:
- Towson took advantage of early Elon miscues in the first inning, beginning with Nolan Young reaching first on a fielding error at third. Young later took second on a wild pitch and third on an error, scoring on an Elijah Dickerson sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
- Elon also scored in the opening inning. With a man on first and two out, Luke Stephenson lined a ball into the right-center gap for an RBI double and a tied game at 1-1.
- The Tigers rallied in the top of the second as Chandler Castleberry led off with a walk, stealing second and going to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Burke Camper took a full count pitch over the left field wall for a two-run home run. With one away, Nick Brown walked then Jake Lysaght singled to left for two on. Young lasered a ball down the left field line for an RBI double, then a James Moses ground out brought another home. Dickerson walked, then Jack McLaughlin blasted a ball over the left-center wall for a three-run home run, completing a seven-run second inning for an 8-1 Towson lead.
- Into the bottom of the third, Elon got its own rally going, putting two via the walk. With two out, Stephenson hit a home run to right-center to score three. Elon followed with a hit-by-pitch then a double to left for another run, completing a four-run inning and making the score 8-5 Towson.
- Towson countered in a big way in the next half-inning. Moses got on via throwing error then Dickerson notched a double in the left-center gap. McLaughlin reached on a chopper down the third base line for an RBI infield single, then Castleberry drilled a ball to deep right-center for a three-run home run, putting Towson's lead back to seven at 12-5.
- Elon got a run back in the fifth: Stephenson doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI ground out for a 12-6 Towson score.
- Brett Seils took command on the mound and shut down Elon in the final four innings. Towson took the victory 12-6.
