TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team took on the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season champion on Thursday to open the series, falling to Charleston 15-3.
Towson (12-39, 2-19 CAA) kept within striking distance in the early innings, trailing by four after seven innings to Charleston (36-15, 19-3 CAA). The Cougars scored eight in the eighth, aided by two home runs, to seal the game.
Key Stats:
- Two Tigers multi-hit in the game, led by James Moses going 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Jordan Peyton went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Peyton was the starting pitching in the contest, going three innings with two runs and four strikeouts in the no-decision. The loss went to reliever Max Simpson (3-1), who had three runs charged, two earned, in the fourth innings without a batter retired.
- For Charleston, Trotter Harlan hit 4-for-5 with a home run, two runs, three RBI and a walk. Starter Ty Good (10-4) picked up the victory, going seven innings with three runs and nine strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Charleston got off to a quick start. With one on, one out, Trotter Harlan took the first pitch and drove it over the left-center field wall for a two-run home run and a 2-0 Cougars lead.
- Jordan Peyton settled in and kept the deficit at two going into the bottom of third. Towson loaded the bases with one out via two walks and a Peyton single. James Moses flew a single down the right field line to bring in two and tie the game at 2-2.
- The visitors responded in the next half-inning, loading the bases with two walks and a throwing error. Jared Kirven hit a two-run single on a bouncer up the middle, then a Cam Dean sacrifice fly added a third run. Charleston led 5-2 after four innings.
- Charleston began the top of the sixth with a couple of free passes. Doug Marose induced a pop out and fielder's choice, but a throwing error allowed a run to score. Back-to-back singles brought home another run for a 7-2 Charleston advantage.
- Towson got a run back in the sixth as Elijah Dickerson led off the frame with a double off the right-center wall. With two outs, Burke Camper found the hole on the left side for an RBI single, bringing the score to 7-3 Charleston.
- The Cougars scored eight runs in the top of the eighth, including a Sam Cochrane three-run home run and a Landon Choboy grand slam, to go up 15-3.
- Towson picked up first and second with nobody out in the eighth, but a line drive double play ended the threat. Towson fell to Charleston 15-3.
