Last Chance Home Runs Send Towson Baseball to Walk-Off Victory vs. Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – Chandler Castleberry will forever remember his final collegiate at-bat, hitting a walk-off solo home run over the right field wall to send the Towson University baseball team to victory over Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion Charleston 3-2 to give the Tigers a series win over the Cougars.

Down 2-1 in the ninth with two out and a 2-2 count, Jack McLaughlin hit a solo home run over the right-center wall to tie the game.  Chandler Castleberry stepped in and hit his own solo home run on a 2-2 count to give Towson (14-39, 4-19 CAA) a walk-off victory over Charleston (36-17, 19-5 CAA).

Before the game, Towson honored its senior class in a pregame ceremony as the Tigers played their final contest of the 2022 season.

Key Stats:
  • Chandler Castleberry finished the game 1-for-3 with his walk-off home run and a hit-by-pitch.  Jack McLaughlin was 1-for-4 with his game tying home run while Matt Arceo went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the third.
  • On the mound, Nick Janowicz went 4.1 scoreless innings, striking out fie batters.  The win went to reliever Cam Clark (2-0), who pitched the final two flawless innings.
  • For Charleston, Joseph Mershon had an RBI triple, going 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Starter Emmett Bice had a no-decision on four innings and one run while reliever William Privette (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season on 4.2 innings, two runs and six strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Nick Janowicz held Charleston scoreless through the opening three innings, striking out five along the way.  Into the bottom of the third, singles by Trent Gast-Woodard and Jake Lysaght put runners on the corners.  With two away, Matt Arceo flared a single to shallow right to score Gast-Woodard and give Towson the lead 1-0.
  • Charleston threatened in the fifth with runners on the corners and two out.  The Cougars went for a double steal, with Lysaght making a perfect throw from short to get the runner going home to keep the Towson lead.
  • Charleston drew a walk in the top of the sixth with one away.  Joseph Mershon powered a ball into the right-center gap for a triple, scoring on a subsequent throwing error at third to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
  • William Privette held down the Tigers until two out in the bottom of the ninth.  Facing his final strike, Jack McLaughlin hit a ball opposite way over the right-center field fence to tie the game.  Next batter, also facing a 2-2 count, Chandler Castleberry sent a pitch into the visiting bullen in right field to send Towson to a 3-2 walk-off win.
Inside the Numbers:
