TOWSON, Md. – Finally getting to play after days of rain in the area, the Towson University baseball team played a couple of close games with JMU but fell in both halves of the doubleheader 4-2 (7 inn.) and 5-4.
Towson (10-36, 1-16 CAA) had early leads in each contest against JMU (26-20, 11-6 CAA), but the Dukes came back from down two in game one and down three in game two for the victories.
Key Stats:
- James Moses hit safely in each contest, combining to go 3-for-7 with three runs in the two games. Despite being hitless in game one, Nolan Young went 4-for-5 with a run and a pair of stolen bases in the second contest. Elijah Dickerson was 1-for-5 in the doubleheader, having a double and three runs driven in.
- Game one starter Ethan Pecko (0-3) got the loss, going 4.2 innings with four runs, just two earned, with six strikeouts. Cam Clark completed the first game with two-and-a-third scoreless. In game two, starter Nick Janowicz did not decision with three innings, four runs and three strikeouts. The loss went to Jake Pecilunas (1-3), who had an unearned run in two innings plus two strikeouts. Nate Nabholz finished game two with four scoreless innings, striking out four.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Towson got two on to begin the first with a James Moses flare single and a Matt Arceo walk. Elijah Dickerson hammered a ball to the left-center gap for an RBI double and a 1-0 Towson lead.
- Into the third, Towson picked up runners on the corners with a single and a throwing error. A balk on JMU pitcher Justin Showalter pushed Moses home for a 2-0 Towson advantage.
- JMU got its first run in the fourth after two free passes, an advancement error and a balk to make it 2-1.
- In a wild top of the fifth inning, JMU got first and second with two away. A single to the shortstop was followed by a throwing error to allow a run to score. An RBI single and a proceeding throwing error by the catcher brought home two more as JMU got a 4-2 lead.
- Towson put a runner on in the seventh on an error but did not score again in the seven-inning game and fell 4-2.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- Back-to-back singles for the Tigers began the bottom of the first. The next batter reached on a throwing error, allowing a run to score. Elijah Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly, then Chandler Castleberry hit a line drive RBI single to left to give Towson an early 3-0 lead.
- Next half-inning, Mason Dunaway hit a home run to left field with nobody on, one out. With Ryan Dooley following with a double, Nick Zona pushed a single to center to score Dooley and pull JMU within one.
- Towson got a run back in the bottom of the second, loading the bases on two walks and a Nolan Young single. Dickerson hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, this one to left, to score Jacob Terao and make it 4-2 Towson.
- Another one-out solo home run for JMU came off the bat of Travis Reifsnider with one out in the third. A two-out double was followed by a Dunaway RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
- JMU took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning. The Dukes loaded the bases, with the aid of an error, with one away. Dunaway hit a sacrifice fly to center to push JMU ahead.
- Towson got the potential tying run on in the seventh via a Young single, advancing to third on a pair of ground outs, but a third ground out ended the inning. JMU held the rest of the way for the 5-4 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Nolan Young earned the first four-hit game for Towson this season.
- Ethan Pecko's 4.2 inning outing was his longest of the year.
