Women's Lacrosse Falls in Overtime of CAA Championship

PHILADELPHIA – The top-seeded Towson University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 11-10 decision in overtime to No. 2 Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships on Sunday afternoon.  

The Tigers battled back from a five-goal deficit, dominating in the second half, scoring six goals to the opposition's two. as Kerri Thornton tied the game up, 10-10, with 2:31 left in regulation. The Dragons converted on a woman-up advantage less than a minute into the first overtime period to secure the win. 

Halley Koras paced the team with three goals in the third quarter to secure her fifth hat trick of the season. Milana Zizakovic and Kerri Liucci also added two goals apiece.  

The defense was strong down the stretch, coming up with big stops and holdinig DU scoreless in the fourth quarter. Olivia Malamphy led the back field with a career-high five ground balls. In addition, Malamphy and Shannon Sullivan also paced the team with two caused turnovers.

How it Happened    

  • Drexel got out to an early lead, starting the contest off with a four-goal run.  
  • Pearre got the Tigers on the board with a score just over the eight-minute mark. Less than a minute later, Liucci contributed back-to-back goals, including one from the 8-meter, to put the game within one score, 4-3.  
  • The Dragons added one more score before the end of the first to take the 5-3 edge into the second quarter.  
  • DU kicked off the second 15 minute period on another two-goal spurt to regain the decisive 7-3 lead.  
  • Lindsay Clarke added a score from the 8-meter before the Dragons answered with a goal of their own to give the opposition the 8-4 advantage going into the locker room. 
  • To start the second half, Koras scored off a feed from Clarke right in front. Shortly after Zizakovic added a score of her own to further cut the deficit to two goals, 8-6.  
  • DU had an answer one again, scoring to keep the 9-6 lead. Koras, however, continued to go to cage, scoring back-to-back goals to put the contest back within one goal, 9-8. 
  • Drexel added one more goal just before the end of the third to maintain the 10-8 edge going into the final 15 minutes of play. 
  • Both teams were held scoreless for the opening 5:20 of the fourth, but it was Zizakovic that broke through, driving to the net for her second score of the day. The goal put the game back within one, 10-9.  
  • With 2:31 to go in regulation, Kerri Thornton tied the game up, 10-10, with a clutch goal off the rebound from a missed free position attempt.  
  • Neither team scored in the final minutes of play to force overtime.  
  • Following the opening draw control of the first overtime period, Towson was dealt a green card. The next possession, Drexel capitalized to score on the woman-up advantage just 47 seconds into action to secure the win in extra time.  

Key Stats  

  • The last three consecuitve meetings between Towson and Drexel have been pushed to overtime, dating back to the 2021 CAA Semifinals. 
  • Pearre remains 12th on the top 20 scoring list with 118 career goals. She ends the season four scores behind Andi Raymond (122). In addition, Pearre had one draw controls to bring her career total up to 165. She remains ranked fifth in program history, three behind Becky Trumbo (168).  
  • Pearre also picked up four ground balls to tie her season high.  
  • Koras secured 10 multi-goal games in first collegiate campaign including five hat tricks. 
  • Carly Merlo ended the day with 11 saves, her third double-digit save total of the season. She also had 11 stops the last time the Tigers met the Dragons, to match her second best save total of the season.  
  • With six unique goal scorers against the Dragons, the Tigers have now seen five or more players score in 11 consecutive outings.
