TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team earned its second consecutive shutout in Sunday night's 2-0 victory vs. Mount St. Mary's.
Towson (2-1-1) scored a goal in each half, from
Nia Christopher and
Danielle Campbell, and held Mount St. Mary's (0-1-2) to three shots on goal, all in the second half, en route to the victory.
Key Stats:
- Towson outshot the Mount 18-8 in the game, including putting 10 shots on cage to its opponent's three.
- Nia Christopher scored her first goal of the season in the 35th minute, assisted by Phoebe Canoles, while Danielle Campbell notched her first career goal in the 70th minute off a corner kick, assisted by Jasmine Hamid and Reese Borden. Canoles led all players with seven shots, placing five on net.
- Riley Melendez picked up the shutout victory, making three saves.
- For the Mount, Kalli Bell led in shots with three, placing two on goal. Arden Lembryk had the loss despite seven saves, allowing two goals.
How It Happened:
- Towson was the early aggressor as couple of long range shots from Phoebe Canoles and Demi Pierre were on cage in the opening six minutes.
- Mount St. Mary's got its push beginning in the 13th minute, dominating possession for several minutes. A corner kick in the 14th minute came to Hannah Cooksey, who sent a shot high.
- Following a cleared corner in the 21st minute, Rebecca Groseibl fired hard outside the box, getting blocked. A second chance by Jasmine Hamid missed high.
- After some back-and-forth in the midfield, Canoles looked for another long range attempt in minute 33, being saved. Towson kept the pressure as Canoles stole the ball just past midfield and got the pass to Nia Christopher, who sprinted and got past the keeper in the 35th minute for the open net goal, sending Towson up 1-0.
- Canoles nearly put a second goal in the net from a hard right-to-left shot, with a Mount defender near the post making the stop. The Tigers picked up two corner kicks but did not score. Towson took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
- The Mount had the early attacks in the opening minutes of the second in hope to equalize. Kalli Bell twice tried close to get shots past Melendez, with the Tiger keeper turning back each.
- In the 65th minute, Towson kept down on the offensive third after a high Hamid shot with a corner kick. Danielle Campbell hit a liner low but was saved.
- Reese Borden's 70th minute corner kick was headed by Hamid back out a couple of meters. Campbell fired off the right foot and scored to get Towson up 2-0.
- The Mount tried a quick counterattack in minute 73 as Gia Johnson looked for the left post, being saved by Melendez. Towson held off its opponent without any more shots the rest of the way to win 2-0.

- Riley Melendez has three shutouts in four games and 11 solo in her collegiate career.
- Nia Christopher notched her 15th career goal, putting her 10th all-time in program history.
