Towson, Md. – The Towson University football team scored 14 points in the third quarter in a comeback attempt but fell to New Hampshire 37-14 in the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener on Saturday night.
Towson (2-2, 0-1 CAA) tried to rally from a 17-point halftime deficit with touchdowns by
Robert Schwob and
Devin Matthews but could not catch up to UNH (3-1, 3-0 CAA).
New Hampshire came into this game receiving votes in each the STATS FCS and AFCA Coaches polls.
Key Stats:
- Tyrrell Pigrome was 14-for-28 on passing, finishing with 142 yards and a touchdown to Robert Schwob, who had two catches for 25 yards. Da'Kendall James made three catches for 52 yards.
- On the ground, Devin Matthews ran for 41 yards, including a season-long 34-yard break, and a touchdown.
- On the defensive end, Ryan Kearney had 11 tackles to lead all players, with Mason Woods getting nine. Makye Smith concluded with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
- For UNH, Max Brosmer completed 17 passes on 23 attempts for 194 yards and three touchdowns, finding Joey Corcoran for six receptions and a touchdown. Dylan Laube rushed for 114 yards on 23 carries plus had a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown. On defense, Dylan Ruiz picked up three sacks on four total tackles.
How It Happened:
- UNH started with a surprise, having an onside kick and recovering on the Towson 47. The Wildcats pushed to the Towson 8 where Robert Javier and Daniel Raymond stopped Dylan Laube on a third down rushing attempt. Nick Mazzie converted the 25-yard field goal attempt to give UNH a 3-0 lead.
- Towson looked to drive from its own 17, converting a third down with a 16-yard dart across the middle to Brady McElhaney. Tyrrell Pigrome had another 10+ yard pass to D'Ago Hunter as Towson was stifled around midfield and punted. The Towson defense held UNH to a three-and-out on rushes and got the ball back after the punt.
- Towson went to the running game for its next drive as Pigrome and Devin Matthews bolted Towson to the UNH 49, but was stopped. Laube returned the oncoming punt 92 yards for the touchdown, pushing UNH up 10-0 towards the end of the first.
- Pigrome converted a third-and-two on a five-yard scramble, but Towson had to punt after the next set of downs. UNH drove 77 yards in the next 8:27 of play, finishing on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Max Brosmer to Joey Corcoran, to go up 17-0 with 2:44 left in the second.
- The Tigers attempted a final push to end the half as a pair of passes to Isaiah Perkins got Towson to the UNH 25, but time expired before Towson could score. UNH led 17-0 at the break.
- UNH took three plays to score a touchdown on the third quarter opening drive, capped by a 51-yard passing touchdown to Heron Maurisseau, to go up 24-0. Towson responded with a scoring drive of its own; on second-and-nine from its own 14, the Tigers had a 35-yard catch by Da'Kendall James, a 34-yard rush from Matthews and a 17-yard catch by Robert Schwob to score a touchdown and make it 24-7 Wildcats.
- UNH pushed towards midfield and had a conversion on third-and-one on a Brosmer scramble, then Jesus Gibbs stripped the ball away and Makye Smith recovered for Towson. However, the Tigers had a turnover on downs and gave the ball back to UNH. Laube rushed UNH down to the Towson 10 in six plays, then a 10-yard catch and score by Brian Espanet made it 31-7 visitors.
- Pigrome used his legs to get Towson downfield into UNH territory with a couple of nine+ yard sprints, with a late hit on him pushing the Tigers to the UNH 17. A pass interference penalty put Towson on the two, where Matthews pounded the ball into the end zone for the touchdown. Towson trailed 31-14 with one minute left in the third quarter.
- The Wildcats started draining the clock, using a seven-minute drive into the fourth quarter. A Mazzie field goal made it 34-14 Wildcats with 8:58 to play.
- Towson looked to come back but was stifled on its own 27. UNH added one more final field goal to go up 37-14, the eventual final score.

- Da'Kendall James has made at least three receptions in all four games this season.
- Devin Matthews stands with 11 career rushing touchdowns.
- This is the second game where Ryan Kearney has led Towson in tackles, having a team-high seven vs. Morgan State on Sept. 10. Mason Woods has had nine tackles in each of the last two games.
