Christopher, Hamid Power Towson Women’s Soccer Past Bucknell

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's soccer team picked up their fourth straight victory in a 2-0 win against Bucknell on Thursday night.  

Towson (5-1-1) scored the opening goal of the game on Nia Christopher's 28
th minute penalty kick. That would be all the Tigers would need to get past Bucknell (3-3). Jasmine Hamid added an insurance goal in the 65th minute off a Reese Borden corner kick. 

The Tigers
improved their win streak to four games and are undefeated in their last five with four shutouts during the streak.

Head Coach Katherine Vettori: "It was nice to convert two set pieces tonight against a tough Bucknell team. We defended hard and it was nice to pick up another clean sheet." 

Key Stats:
 
  • Towson earned four corner kicks compared to just one for the Bison.  
  • Nia Christopher scored her third goal of the year on the only shot she took. Jasmine Hamid also netted her third goal of the season, with all three coming in the last two contests. Reese Borden assisted on the Hamid goal. 
  • In goal, Riley Melendez posted another shutout, making four saves. 
  • For the Bison, Paige Temple and Rylee Donaldson each had three shots with Donaldson putting two on goal. 
How It Happened: 
  • Bucknell controlled most of the possession early on, forcing Riley Melendez to make a pair of saves early. 
  • The Tigers had their first good chance on goal with Demi Pierre blasting a shot on goal that had to be pushed over the crossbar. 
  • The Bison responded with a chance off a free kick, but the attempt went wide. 
  • Nia Christopher gave Towson the lead in the 28th minute. After drawing a foul in the box, Christopher calmly put home her penalty kick to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 
  • Phoebe Canoles had a good look in the 45th minute, but her shot was saved as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime. 
  • In the 66th minute, Reese Borden whipped in a beautiful ball off a corner kick that found Jasmine Hamid who headed it home to give Towson a 2-0 advantage. 
  • Bucknell would have a chance in the 81st minute to get one back, but Melendez made the save as Towson picked up a 2-0 win. 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Riley Melendez now has five shutouts this season and 13 solo shutouts in her career. 
  • Nia Christopher scores her 17th career goal and moves into ninth all-time. She also scored her eighth game winning goal, good for second all-time. 
  • Towson picked up their first home win against Bucknell all-time and the first win in six contests against the Bison. 
Next Game:  
Towson will travel to Annapolis to take on Navy on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.
