Second Half Surge Leads Towson Men’s Basketball Past North Carolina A&T, 79-67 on Thursday

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. – Towson men's basketball extended their winning streak to three with a convincing 79-67 win against North Carolina A&T on Thursday. The Tigers led the whole way, outscoring the Aggies 20-7 for a seven-minute stretch to pull away.

Nygal Russell led the Tigers (13-7, 5-2 CAA) with a season-high 18 points going 7-12 from the floor, leading four Tigers in double figures.

Key Stats:
  • Nicolas Timberlake added 17 points with five rebounds and has now reached double figures in 11 of his last 12 games.
  • Sekou Sylla and Charles Thompson also hit double digits with 15 and 13 respectively. Thompson led the Tigers with nine rebounds.
  • Towson shot 53 percent from the floor and 42 percent from three, leading for 38:40 of game time.
How It Happened:
  • Sekou Sylla got the Tigers out to a fast start, scoring six of the first 11 points.
  • Towson would use an 8-0 run over a two-minute stretch to push ahead by 10 after a Rahdir Hicks layup to force an Aggie timeout.
  • The Tigers extended that lead to 11 after a Sylla driving layup at the under 12 media timeout.
  • The Aggies cut the Tiger lead to single digits, but a three from Nygal Russell and bucket from Cam Holden pushed Towson back up double figures.
  • North Carolina A&T continued to cut into the deficit, getting it all the way to six points. However, Nygal Russell once again had the answer with a reverse layup as both teams started to heat up from the floor.
  • The Aggies would cut the lead to four on back-to-back threes to force a Towson timeout. Sylla would end the run with a tough lay-in.
  • Ryan Conway would nail a late jumper to give Towson a 40-35 lead at the break.
  • Both teams would come out and exchange baskets, but it was a Nicolas Timberlake triple just before the under 16 timeout that gave Towson a seven-point advantage.
  • Towson would once again distance themselves thanks to a 7-0 run keyed by a Timberlake triple.
  • That extended to a 10-0 run after Nygal Russell hit a bucket and got the foul.
  • Towson push ahead for good with a 9-2 spurt with Charles Thompson hitting an and one and Russell hitting his third three of the contest to go up 17.
  • That would be all the Tigers would need, starting their North Carolina trip with a 79-67 win.
Inside The Numbers:
  • The 79 points scored was the third most in a game this season just behind 83 points against Coppin State and 80 points against Penn.
  • The win was the first against the Aggies and gave Towson their sixth road victory of the season.
  • With his 17 points, Nicolas Timberlake tied Gary Neal for 16th on the all-time scoring list with 1,254 points. Timberlake is now just five points behind Brian Barber in 15th place and is 51 points behind hall of famer Chuck Lightening for 14th.
