WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Down 17 early in the second quarter, the Towson University football team pulled off a tremendous second half comeback with 34 unanswered points to take down No. 13 William & Mary 34-24 in Williamsburg.
This is Towson's (3-4, 2-2 CAA) second straight victory over a then top-15 team and third straight win on the road.
Scoring two touchdowns to tie the game in the third, Towson took the lead on a long drive in the fourth off a
Keegan Vaughan 24-yard field goal. The defense had a pair of three-and-outs against W&M (4-3, 2-2 CAA) to keep the Tribe from scoring, having a span of over 42 minutes without points allowed.
Carter Runyon scored two late receiving touchdowns, including one for 53 yards, to effectively seal the game.
With the victory, Towson has defeated both of the 2022 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) champions on the road this season, including a 54-51 overtime win at then No. 14/17 New Hampshire on Sept. 30.

How it Happened
- W&M started with the ball on offense. Focusing on the run, the Tribe converted a fourth and one on a direct snap, then got into Towson territory on another run by quarterback Darius Wilson. W&M kept flipping quarterbacks between Wilson and Hollis Mathis, still using runs, but converting a third and five off a pass to the right for 11 yards and a trip to the Towson 26. Putting pressure on an option run, Towson stopped W&M on third down with a Xavier Terry push of the runner out of bounds one yard short of the first down marker. W&M converted a 36-yard field goal to lead 3-0 with 6:34 left in the first.
- A snap infraction and dropped pass stopped Towson's first drive in three plays. Working on a short field, W&M came down the field in five plays, all runs, to score a touchdown and lead 10-0.
- A dart across the middle from Nathan Kent to Carter Runyon for 23 yards put Towson on its own 47, then a five-yard burst from Christopher Watkins got Towson into W&M territory, but an incompletion on third down ended the drive. W&M, on second down, saw Malachi Imoh run for 56 yards. Into the second quarter, the Tribe needed three more plays to finish the drive, ending on an eight-yard touchdown pass to Mathis. W&M led 17-0 with 13:39 left in the second.
- Towson started to get success in its own running game, beginning with rushes of 11 and 24 in a row by Devin Matthews. After a Watkins run for eight, a W&M upsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the Tigers into the red zone, but a sacked ended the touchdown chances. Keegan Vaughan knocked down the 28-yard field goal to put Towson on the board as the Tigers trailed 17-3 with just over 10 minutes left in the half.
- W&M put together a long drive, getting to the Towson 14 for first down. The Towson defensive line turned up the pressure, forcing an incompletion then sacking Wilson to set up third down. Terry stopped Sean McElwain for a four-yard loss, then W&M missed the field goal attempt wide right.
- Towson looked for a final first half drive, with Kent converting a third down on a scramble to the right then drawing a roughing the passer penalty. Facing another third down, Kent made a flip to a nearby Matthews while nearly being sacked for an eight-yard gain, but a 45-yard field goal attempt following was missed. Towson trailed 17-3 at half.
- Into the second half, a Matthews run to the left converted one first down, but another chance was stopped to pull up fourth down. Josh Cupitt pulled off the fake punt, running down the sideline for nine yards to convert the fourth and six. A roughing the passer penalty continued the drive into W&M territory as Towson continued the long drive, converting another first down on a Matthews rush. Little by little Towson continued, as on fourth down, Kent found Carter Runyon across the middle for six yards and a conversion, then on another third down, Kent scrambled with room and got 10 yards before being hit hard for the first down at the W&M 4. Towson inched closer, setting up fourth and goal on the one. Kent powered his way forward to score the touchdown, completing a 22-play, 82-yard drive. Towson trailed 17-10 with 3:24 left in the third.
- Towson continued on as Justin Toler pushed a defender into the kickoff return man to force a fumble, recovered by Alijah Bivans on the W&M 26. Kent led the way again after a holding call, rushing up the middle for 12 then throwing quickly to Zay Perkins for 13 and a first down. Two plays later, Matthews burst throw the middle, breaking a tackle and scoring on the 10-yard run. Towson tied the game 17-17 with 1:21 left in the third.
- A fresh Towson defense stonewalled W&M on its first drive of the second half as the Tribe gained just two yards, punting to finish the third quarter.
- Into the fourth, Towson again came down the field as Kent bounced around two defenders to convert a third down, then Watkins converted one off a bounce out to the left side. On first and 20 due to a holding call, a screen pass to Sabias Folley sent the Tigers 27 yards. Vaughan kicked a 24-yard field goal as Towson took the lead 20-17 with 7:48 to play.
- W&M attempted to come back, with a 22-yard run being nullified by a holding penalty. Towson contained W&M to force a three-and-out. Facing third and three, a short pass from Kent to Runyon led to a breakaway as Runyon went 53 yards for the touchdown as Towson led 27-17 with 4:01 left.
- The defense continued to attack as on the next drive, Rodney Roane Jr. forced a fumble on a sack of Wilson. Jesus Gibbs recovered as Towson took over on the W&M 20. After a few Matthews rushes to put Towson on the 1, a short pass to Runyon for a touchdown made it 34-17 Towson with 1:55 to play.
- W&M drove down the field off the passing and running by Wilson to score a touchdown on an 18-yard pass to Mathis. Daniel Raymond recovered the onside kick as Towson ran out the clock and won 34-24.
