Christopher’s Late Goal Gives Women’s Soccer 1-0 Win For First CAA Championship Game Appearance in Program History

TOWSON, Md. – Towson women's soccer outshot the Tribe 16-2 on Sunday, but it was a late goal from Nia Christopher that was the difference in a 1-0 win for the Tigers. Towson advances to the CAA championship game for the first time in program history with the win.

Towson (14-2-2) also ties the program record for wins in a single season with the win over William & Mary (9-4-7). Head Coach Katherine Vettori picked up career win number 100 on Sunday and her 44th win at Towson.

  • Christopher scored the lone goal and now has a goal in two straight games.
  • Jasmine Hamid and Phoebe Canoles had four shots each with Canoles providing the assist on the Christopher goal.
  • Riley Melendez made one save on the only shot on goal she faced. Her shutout now ties her with Tina Steck for the most shutouts all-time.
  • The Tigers outshot the Tribe 16-2 and had four corner kicks, surrendering just one.
How It Happened:
  • Towson got out on the front foot early with Phoebe Canoles getting a shot off just six minutes in.
  • Reese Borden had the first chance on net for the Tigers in the 12th minute, but her long-range attempt was stopped by Tribe goalkeeper Morgan Wood.
  • The Tigers nearly got on the board in the 19th minute. Jasmine Hamid found the ball at her feet at the top of the box, but her shot sailed high of the net.
  • Towson would control most of play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Tribe 9-1 in the first half, but both teams went into the half knotted at 0-0.
  • The Tigers continued their attack in the second half. Maja Hansson had a great look off a free kick but her header rang off the post.
  • William & Mary would push on the counter attack getting a look at goal but Riley Melendez made a big diving save to keep the score tied.
  • Towson would finally break through in the 87th minute. Phoebe Canoles got a ball over the top and played it across the box. Nia Christopher would get the ball on her feet and slot home a shot to give Towson a 1-0 lead, winning by that score and advancing to the CAA championship game.

  • Towson has now tied the record for most wins in a single season with 14.
  • The Tigers advance to the CAA championship game for the first time in program history and are now 2-2 all-time in CAA Tournament games.
  • Riley Melendez has tied Tina Steck for most shutouts in a career with 28 after recording her ninth this season on Sunday.

  • Towson will face No. 3 Monmouth who defeated No. 2 Hofstra in overtime 2-1 on Sunday in the CAA Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field. The winner will receive the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
