Towson Football Falls at No. t13/18 Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – In its final road regular season game of the season, the Towson University football team fell at No. t13/18 Villanova 33-10 on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Towson (4-6, 3-4 CAA) was unable to come back after being down 24-0 to Villanova (8-2, 6-1 CAA) at halftime.  Towson scored with a 75-yard rushing touchdown by Chris Watkins in the fourth quarter.

This was Towson's only road loss of the season to an FCS opponent.  The Tigers are 4-1 on the road against FCS foes this year.

Key Stats:
  • Chris Watkins averaged 15 yards a carry, tallying 90 yards on six rushes and a touchdown.  Devin Matthews ran the ball nine times for 52 yards.  At quarterback, Nathan Kent was 10-for-21 for 53 yards.
  • On defense, Daniel Raymond tallied up 13 tackles, including 2.5 for loss.  Dorian Davis finished with six tackles and an interception while Dion Crews-Harris had four tackles and two sacks.
  • For Villanova, Connor Watkins went 15-for-25 for 299 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, finding Rayjuon Pringle five times for 180 yards and two scores.  Jalen Jackson rushed the ball 14 times for 85 yards.  Shane Hartzell had the Villanova team lead in tackles with seven.
How it Happened
  • Villanova started on offense and was hindered by early holding penalties.  Facing third and seven, Shafeek Smith batted a pass in the air, which was intercepted by Dorian Davis.  Despite starting on the Villanova 35, Towson's offense could not get a first down, with a fourth down conversion attempt being stopped four years short.  Despite a couple more penalties on Villanova, Rayjoun Pringle got past the Towson secondary and scored a touchdown on a 79-yard completion to put the home team up 7-0, 9:40 left in the 1st.
  • Towson was held to a three-and-out and punted.  Villanova came down the field, converting a fourth and four on a 20-yard pass, but Towson held on a third and one throwing attempt wide of the end zone.  Villanova kicked a 24-yard field goal to lead 10-0, 3:15 in the 1st.
  • Nathan Kent converted a third and long with a 13-yard scramble to near-midfield, but Towson was halted there and could not advance.  After a punt into the second quarter, Dion Crews-Harris sacked Connor Watkins for seven yards, but Villanova converted on a 17-yard pass.  Towson's defense held from there and forced a punt, being pinned on its own 6.  Devin Matthews and Chris Watkins had strong runs to get Towson back to midfield, but again Towson was stopped and forced to punt.
  • On first and 10 on the Villanova 43, Crews-Harris again sacked Watkins, this time for six yards.  Next play, Watkins found Pringle again past the Towson secondary for a 63-yard touchdown reception to make it 17-0 Villanova with 2:43 left in the half.
  • A sack on Kent stopped Towson's drive as Villanova looked to go down for a final drive of the half.  Passes of 24, 11, 14 and 19 yards gave Villanova a touchdown with 26 seconds to play in the half for a 24-0 home team lead, the eventual halftime score.
  • Towson looked to its passing game to start the second half, going for it on fourth and five with a 22-yard completion to Carter Runyon to break into Villanova territory.  Devin Matthews took it from there with a couple of seven-yard rushes to reach the red zone.  Despite a couple of incompletions, Keegan Vaughan converted the 33-yard field goal to put Towson on the board, trailing 24-3 with 9:45 left in the third.
  • Villanova went on a long drive in the third quarter, going over eight minutes, constantly mixing up passing and rushes.  On third and one on the Towson 4, a direct snap to TD Ayo-Durojaiye led to a four-yard touchdown run for a 31-3 Villanova lead with 1:29 to go in the third.
  • After a Towson three-and-out, Villanova started just behind midfield going into the final quarter.  The Wildcats got a couple of big rushes, but as Villanova looked to score, Evan Rutkowski ripped the ball out of Jalen Jackson's hands at the 1 for the forced fumble and recovery, giving Towson the ball.  With Towson pushed back, a fumble on the snap resulted in a safety for Villanova to lead 33-3.
  • A Daniel Raymond tackle loss for five yards on a running play stopped Villanova's drive to put Towson on its own 25.  On the first play, Chris Watkins burst up the middle for a 75-yard rushing touchdown to make it 33-10 Villanova with 7:10 to play.
  • Running down the clock, Villanova tried to score a touchdown late, with Jesus Gibbs stopping the ball-carrier on the Towson 2 for a turnover on downs.  Villanova still took the win 33-10.
Inside the Numbers
  • Chris Watkins's rush of 75 yards is the longest for Towson since Tom Flacco burst for 78 yards vs. The Citadel on Sept. 29, 2018.
