Four Score in Double Figures as Men’s Basketball Defeats Robert Morris, 66-62 on Sunday Night

TOWSON, Md. – Towson men's basketball battled with Robert Morris, using a late 8-2 run to pull ahead of the Colonials for good in the finals two minutes. Charles Thompson led the charge with 14 points as four Tigers hit double figures.

Towson (2-1) shot just under 50 percent from the floor with Thompson going for a 14-point, 10-rebound double double against the Colonials (1-2).

Key Stats:
  • Thompson shot 6-11 from the floor with a team-high two blocks.
  • Tyler Tejada, Christian May and Tomiwa Sulaiman all hit double figures with 13, 11, and 10 respectively. Tejada added seven rebounds in the win.
  • Towson shot 47.3 percent from the floor and 30 percent from three. The Tigers outrebounded the Colonials 40-25 and scored 14 second chance points.
How It Happened:
  • Towson ripped off a 5-0 run with a Charles Thompson slam to take a 7-3 lead at the under 16 timeout.
  • The Colonials would fight back with a pair of triples to retake the lead. However a Mekhi Lowery dunk and Messiah Jones layup would put the Tigers up by three.
  • The Tigers would continue their hot shooting in the first half with Christian May drilling a three and Tyler Tejada making a nice move through the lane to put Towson up seven midway through the half.
  • Robert Morris would fight back cutting the deficit to 35-31 at halftime. Charles Thompson led the way with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • The Tigers shot 56 percent from the floor going 3-5 from three and outrebounded the Colonials 17-12.
  • The pace picked up to start the second half. Robert Morris would come out and cut the deficit to two at the under 16 timeout.
  • The Colonials would tie the game but a pair of Tejada free throws put Towson back up two.
  • Towson ratcheted up the defense over the next four minutes pushing their advantage to four at the under 12 timeout after a Lowery and one.
  • Both teams would go back and forth exchanging buckets with Dylan Williamson tying it with a driving layup with three minutes to go.
  • With under a minute to go, Christian May would clean up his own miss to put Towson back up by two. Rahdir Hicks would knock down two free throws to extend the lead to four.
  • Robert Morris would respond with a driving layup with 8.2 seconds left. However the Tigers would hit free throws late to secure a 66-62 win on Sunday.
Inside The Numbers:
  • Towson outrebounded their opponent for the second straight game with a plus-15 advantage on the glass. Over the last two games, Towson has outrebounded their opponent by an average of 23 per game.
  • The Tigers improve to 93-41 inside TU Arena and won their home opener for the second consecutive season.
  • Charles Thompson is now 25th on the all-time scoring list with 1,071 passing Roger Dickens and Zane Martin.

  • Towson will hit the road to take part in the 2023 Shriner's Children's Charleston Classic next weekend in Charleston, S.C. The Tigers open the three-game tournament against No. 7 Houston on Thursday, Nov. 16. Tip-off with the Cougars is slated for 6:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
