Towson Volleyball Advances to Fifth Consecutive CAA Championship Behind Cajic's 18 Kills

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team hosted the #5 seed Stony Brook in the CAA semifinals on Friday afternoon. The Tigers (24-5, 16-2 CAA) swept the Seawolves (17-14, 11-7 CAA) 25-19, 25-13, 25-22 at TU Arena.

Nina Cajic led all players with 18 kills and six digs on .359 hitting percentage. Irbe Lazda added 10 kills on .556 hitting percentage with three total blocks.

  • The Tigers finished with a .342 hitting percentage.
  • Towson held the Seawolves to a .125 hitting percentage.

How It Happened vs Stony Brook:
  • The Tigers opened the first set with a 6-1 run led by Irbe Lazda's two kills, which forced the Seawolves to take a timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, Stony Brook went on a 8-3 run to level the score at nine.
  • The teams traded points, tying the score three times, before Towson went on a 4-1 run to take a 16-13 lead.
  • Stony Brook cut the deficit to one, but the Tigers closed the first set on a 7-2 run, getting three blocks to win the set 25-19.
  • The second set started with both teams exchanging four kills each, then Towson pulled away with a 6-1 run to take a 10-5 advantage.
  • The teams went back and forth, before three straight points by the Seawolves cut Towson's lead down to two. 
  • The Tigers countered with eight consecutive points that included four kills from Nina Cajic to have a 21-11 lead.
  • Stony Brook tried to spark a late comeback, but four straight points, including back-to-back blocks from Ylenia De Mango and Lazda sealed the second set 25-13.
  • The third set opened with the teams trading 3-1 runs to be tied at four apiece. 
  • The Tigers went on a 7-2 run led by Cajic's five kills to have an 11-6 edge.
  • The Seawolves fought back cutting the deficit to one after scoring nine of the following 13 points to trail 16-15. 
  • Both teams traded 3-1 runs, but Towson scored three straight points to have a 23-19 edge.
  • Stony Brook went on a 3-1 run trying to spark a late comeback, but a Leoni Kunz service error gave the Tigers a 25-22 third set victory.

  • Towson advanced to its fifth straight CAA Championship.
  • The Tigers improved to 13-0 all-time against Stony Brook.
  • Sarah Jordan had 39 assists, five digs and four kills. 
  • Sydney Stewart totaled a team-high 16 digs while Victoria Barrett had 13 digs.
  • Ylenia De Mango had a season-high seven kills on .700 hitting percentage and a team-high five total blocks.
