Towson Baseball Felled at Duke

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team took its first midweek loss of the season 19-3 at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C. Tuesday afternoon.
 
Duke (14-7, 3-3 ACC) scored first with a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the first. Towson's (6-16, 1-5 CAA) Bryce Frederick answered with a solo shot to center in the bottom of the second. The Tigers tied the game at two in the third. After a scoreless fourth, the Blue Devils put up 17 runs in the fifth through eighth innings. Towson got another run home in the eighth but lost 19-3 on the road at Jack Coombs Field.
 
Key Stats:
  • Bryce Frederick finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the game, his fourth of the season. He leads the team and is tied for eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). His 22 RBI ranks fifth in the league. Casey Bishop extended his on-base streak to a team-leading 17 games with a 1-for-4 day at the plate.
  • Towson reliever Brandon Jung (0-1) got the loss for the Tigers. Jacob Whiteman tossed two hitless innings in relief.
  • Duke left fielder Andrew Fischer finished the day 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Duke reliever Ryan Higgins (2-0) recorded the win, with four strikeouts and a walk in three innings pitched.
 
How it Happened:
  • Duke's Alex Mooney led off the game with a double to left. Andrew Fischer followed with a two-run homer to right field, making to 2-0.
  • Bryce Frederick answered with a solo home run of his own to center in the second, cutting the deficit in half.
  • Josh Janove hit a fly ball in the third that was misplayed by the centerfielder, allowing Janove to score on the play to tie the game.
  • Jacob Whiteman came on in the third, tossing two hitless innings for the Tigers.
  • In the fifth, a series of walks and hit batters allowed the Blue Devils to extend their lead to 4-2.
  • A double and single in the sixth pushed one more across for Duke. A wild pitch with a runner on third scored another later in the inning.
  • Mooney's double to left center put two more on the board for Duke.
  • Fischer hit a two-run shot in the seventh, his second of the game, for a 10-2 lead.
  • In the eighth, Stefano walked. He was able to advance to third on a throwing error from the catcher after stealing second. Casey Bishop knocked him home on a single through the right side to make it 10-3.
  • The Blue Devils posted nine runs on six hits in the eighth, bringing the score to 19-3.

Towson will face Richmond on the road at Pitt Field tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
