Towson Men’s Lacrosse Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough at UMBC

TOWSON, Md. – Evan Long and Luke Downs combined for 15 saves in goal to lead the Towson University men's lacrosse team at UMBC, but the Tigers fell 8-4 on Sunday afternoon.
 
Towson (1-4) held UMBC (4-0) to eight goals, including 12 caused turnovers and forcing seven failed clears, but UMBC scored three goals in each the second and third quarters to hold the lead throughout most of the game.
 
This is Towson's fourth straight defeat against a team either ranked or receiving votes in the polls.
 
Key Stats:
  • Evan Long started the first half in goal with nine saves and four goals allowed while Luke Downs had the second half with six saves and four goals allowed.  Garrett Zungailia amassed four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • On the offensive end, Kyle Berkeley led Towson with a pair of goals.  Jamison Gaskins and Alex Reid netted the other two.
  • Matt Constantinides went 50% on faceoffs at 8-for-16, picking up two ground balls.
  • For UMBC, Taylor Bohanan and Nick Gutierrez each scored two goals.  Jayson Tingue got the win in goal, saving eight shots and having four goals allowed in the game.
How It Happened:
  • After a trade in possessions, UMBC scored on a close-range goal right side.  Played went back-and-forth as Towson hammered away, but Jason Tingue saved the first three shots on goal.  The other way, Evan Long saved two shots on goal on a long UMBC possession to hold the deficit at one.
  • Play continued as Long held had five saves in the first quarter, but UMBC led 1-0 after one.
  • UMBC scored first in the second quarter off a Kevin Doughty goal on the doorstep.  Long stopped another pair of shots, but UMBC added another to lead 3-0 with 8:55 left in the 2nd.
  • After UMBC added another to go up four, Kyle Berkeley ended the drought with a behind goal on the goal circle with 4:54 left in the half.  Towson held off UMBC's methodical offense the rest of the half to go to the break down three.
  • Physical play continued as the defense continued to force turnovers and hold as Luke Downs took over in net for Towson in the second half.  Nick Gutierrez scored first in the half for UMBC as the Retrievers led 5-1 just over five minutes into the half.
  • Towson got the goal back as Jamison Gaskins got free off a pass from Austin Ducommon for the hard shot and score.  UMBC responded with two goals in 30 seconds to lead 7-2 in the closing minutes of the third.
  • Berkeley looked to get Towson back in the game, scoring another close range shot on a sprint to the cage 2:31 into the fourth.  Towson forced turnovers and held off UMBC's offense, but could not chip away at the lead as Gutierrez scored with 5:36 left to get the home tam up by five again.
  • Off a failed UMBC clear, Alex Reid scored with 1:43 left on a catch and shoot from Austin StewartThe Tigers could not get closer as Towson fell 8-4 in the game.
Inside the Numbers:
  • With two goals today, Kyle Berkeley extended his point-scoring streak to 13 games. 
  • This game was originally supposed to be played on March 4 but was rescheduled due to a power outage in the Catonsville area.

  • Towson challenges Virginia, the No. 1 team in the country, on Saturday, March 11 at 4 p.m. in Charlottesville.
