Towson Men’s Lacrosse Season Concludes in CAA Semifinal Round

NEWARK, Del. – The 4-seed Towson University men's lacrosse team had an early 3-0 lead against the 1-seed and No. 19/rv Delaware but fell to the Blue Hens 11-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament semifinal round.

Towson's (6-9) 3-0 lead in the opening 4:23 of the game did not hold at Delaware (11-4) as the Blue Hens built a three-goal lead into the third quarter.  Kyle Berkeley's four goals kept Towson close, but Towson could not bridge the final gap.

Today's defeat concludes the 2023 season for Towson men's lacrosse.  Delaware advances to the CAA title game to face either Drexel or Stony Brook.

Key Stats:
  • Many stats were even or near even, with Delaware having a slight 40-38 edge in shots but the ground balls being equal at 32-32.  Delaware won one more faceoff at 12-11.
  • Kyle Berkeley led Towson's offense with four goals, including three in the second half, and an assist.  Four other Tigers had a goal, including three having each a goal and an assist.
  • Matt Constantinides took all faceoffs for Towson, going 11-for-23 with four ground balls.
  • The loss in net went to Evan Long, who had seven saves and 11 goals allowed.  Garrett Zungailia tallied up four ground balls and three caused turnovers, helping a defensive unit which caused 12 turnovers.
How It Happened:
  • Towson won the opening faceoff and scored first on a second chance effort as Joaquin Villagomez found Josh Webber for the straight away heave and score into the top right corner.
  • Delaware scored next but turned it over as Towson kept the pressure on.  The Tigers rolled off two quick goals off a Delaware turnover in transition, off a roll from Nick DeMaio then a dodge from Kyle Berkeley as Towson led 3-0 just 4:23 into the game.
  • Berkeley was denied a second goal off a leaping save from Matt Kilkeary on the doorstep.  Delaware cleared and scored after a barrage of shots, ending with a JP Ward score.
  • Play went back and forth as Towson had to endure a two-minute penalty.  Towson held off two Delaware shots as Evan Long intercepted a pass to stop the possession.  But after the penalty expired, Delaware scored on the next chance on a catch and shoot to JP Ward to pull within one.  Towson led 3-2 after one.
  • Into the second quarter, Towson took advantage of a Delaware faceoff violation as Mikey Weisshaar threw the ball to Ryan Schrier on the doorstep and scored close range.  Garrett Zungailia forced a turnover to stall the Delaware possession, but a failed clear then later a shot in transition and Delaware backup kept the Blue Hens on offense.  Action continued to be high-paced but the keepers held, including Long stopped a close range shot from Joe Acchione.
  • Delaware broke the drought with three goals in a span of 1:46, the final a man-up scenario, to take a 5-4 lead.
  • Following a timeout, Villagomez dropped off to Weisshaar for the straight-away fire and score to tie the game.  Delaware took back the lead off an Owen Grant transition goal as the Blue Hens took a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
  • Delaware won the second half opening faceoff as Logan Premtaj sprinted to the cage and scored in six seconds.  The pressure continued as the two sides had a couple of turnovers in succession on clear attempts.  With 10:20 left in the third, a Nick Jessen goal made it 8-5 Delaware.
  • As the quarter continued, Towson switched up the midfield lines for a different look.  Berkeley scored two goals in a row with defenders in his face to pull Towson back to within one with 3:39 left in the period.  Delaware countered with two unassisted goals to finish the period up 10-7.
  • Into the fourth quarter, Reagan McNemar sprinted down field in transition and had a look, but Kilkeary made the save.  Towson held on Delaware's attacks, then Berkeley added his fourth goal in the corner on a dodge to get Towson within two at 10-8 with 9:53 to play.
  • Towson held off a two-shot Delaware possession, but a turnover was forced at midfield.  The other way, Mike Robinson scored for Delaware to return the lead to three at 11-8 Blue Hens with 6:39 left.
  • Despite some chances late, Towson could not bridge the final gap.  Delaware ran out the clock and won 11-8.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Matt Constantinides surpassed the 200-faceoff win mark on the season, finishing with 207 this year.
  • Kyle Berkeley finishes the year leading the Tigers in goals with 31.
