TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team took down the UMBC Retrievers 17-4 in seven innings at Alumni Field in Catonsville, Maryland Tuesday evening in the final non-conference game of the season for the Tigers.
With a runner on second in the first, UMBC (24-22, 13-8 AEC) a stolen base and advancement on the throwing error gave the Retrievers an early lead. Towson (16-34, 4-20 CAA) responded in the second with six runs on six hits, highlighted by two-run homers from
John Cristino and
Reyce Curnane. In the home half, a single to left scored the runner on third base to make it 6-2. With a runner on second in the third,
Jordan Peyton's single dropped in center to extend the lead to five. Curnane hit his second home run of the day in the fourth to make it a 9-2 game. The Tigers poured it on in the fifth inning with eight runs, highlighted by Cristino's second homer of the day to extend the lead to 15 runs. The Retrievers scored one on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 17-3. A home run in the bottom of the seventh made it a 17-4 game but the Retrievers couldn't score the necessary runs to extend the game before it was called on a 10-run mercy rule.
Key Stats:
- Reyce Curnane finished the night 3-for-3 with four RBI, two home runs and three runs scored. Catcher John Cristino went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two home runs.
- Luis Rivera (4-2) recorded the win with one hit allowed in 2.0 scoreless innings, marking three strikeouts and a walk. Jacob Whiteman tossed one relief inning with two strikeouts.
- UMBC starter Joshua Rivera (1-3) took the loss with six runs allowed (two earned) on seven hits in two innings pitched with a walk.
How it Happened:
- A leadoff walk and stolen base put a runner on second in the bottom of the first. While stealing third, the errant throw sent past the third baseman from the pitcher allowed the runner to score.
- Jeremy Wagner led off the second with a double to right center before Cristino's two-run home run to left field plated Wagner for a 2-1 advantage. Jordan Peyton singled to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch, setting up James Moses to knock him home on a single to center. Bishop's double off the left field wall scored Moses and allowed him to advance to third on the throw home. Curnane followed with a home run to center to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead.
- The Retrievers' Matt Ryan led off the bottom frame with a single through the left side. After advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a fly out, the run was sent home on a single to left field.
- Elijah Dickerson led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, allowing Jordan Peyton's single to center to score Dickerson for a 7-2 Tiger advantage.
- After Casey Bishop was hit by a pitch, Curnane hit his second home run of the day in the fourth to make it a 9-2 game.
- Casey Bishop hit a single to left with the bases loaded in the fifth to tack on two more for the Tigers. After a walk, Bryce Frederick was hit by a pitch to send home another run. An errant throw on a ground ball allowed Wagner to reach and two more runs to score. After Dickerson's ground out, Cristino hit his second homer of the day to right center field to make it a 17-2 game.
- With a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth, a wild pitch allowed the run to score to make it a 17-3 game.
- A home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh made it a 17-4 game, but the game was called after the inning on a 10-run mercy rule.
Inside the Numbers:
- Jeremy Wagner extended his hitting streak to 19 consecutive games. He has now reached base safely in 24 straight.
- Curnane finished the day 3-for-3 with four RBI and two home runs, and now leads the team with 12 on the season. It's his 13th multi-hit game, ninth multi-RBI game and second multi-HR game. His 12 home runs are tied for fourth in the CAA this season despite missing 15 games to start the season.
- Cristino went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two home runs, marking his second multi-home run game of the season and bringing his total to 10. It's his ninth multi-hit game and team-leading 10th multi-RBI game.
