Towson Volleyball Sweeps Rider to Wrap up the Towson/Morgan State Invitational

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University volleyball team wrapped up the Towson/Morgan State Invitational on Sunday afternoon with the Rider Broncs. The Tigers (6-1) defeated the Broncs in straight sets 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 at SECU Arena.  
 
Nina Cajic led the way with ten kills and three service aces for the Tigers while Irbe Lazda totaled seven kills and six total blocks.
 
Key Stats vs Rider:
  • Towson held Rider to -.011 hitting percentage, a season-low for the Broncs.
  • The Tigers totaled 13.5 blocks across the three sets, including eight blocks in the first set.
  • Towson finished with a season-best 12 service aces.
 
How It Happened vs Rider:
  • Rider started the first set with seven straight points, led by four service aces from Ryley Frye.
  • The Tigers responded with seven consecutive points, including three blocks, to even up the score.
  • Towson went on a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 advantage, but the Broncs responded with four consecutive points to have a 12-11 edge.
  • The Tigers regained the lead after a 4-0 run, highlighted by a Trinity Burge ace to have a 15-12 lead.
  • Towson grew its lead to 21-15 after a couple of blocks, then Rider cut the deficit down to two, but the Tigers won the first set 25-21 after a kill and an ace by Irbe Lazda.
  • The second set opened with both teams going back and forth, then the Tigers went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-6 lead behind Nina Cajic's two aces.
  • Towson continued to grow the lead, scoring nine of the following 11 points to take a commanding 18-9 lead.
  • The teams went back and forth for the rest of the set with Sarah Jordan capping off the second set with an ace to win 25-14.
  • The Tigers started the third set with a 6-3 run that included aces from Sydney Stewart and Victoria Barrett.
  • Towson maintained a narrow lead over the Broncs, then the Tigers went on a 7-2 run to have a 20-14 lead.
  • Rider countered with four consecutive points to trail 21-19, but Towson scored four unanswered points to win the set 25-19.
