Hansson’s Header Leads Towson Women’s Soccer over William & Mary

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's soccer team hosted the William & Mary Tribe at Tiger Field in the regular season finale. The Tigers (6-4-9, 4-2-4 CAA) defeated the Tribe (8-10-0, 3-7-0 CAA) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
 
In the first half, Sophie Thibeault had an early chance, but the shot went just wide of the post. The Tigers had three goals called back to due offsides early in the second half. Maja Hansson scored her second goal of the season on header off a corner kick in th 73rd minute. Towson's defense held strong to pick up a 1-0 victory.

  • The Tigers had a 16-15 edge in shots.
  • Riley Melendez finished with three saves while Morgan Wood had five saves.
  • Towson finished with six shots on target compared to three for the Tribe.
 
How It Happened vs William & Mary:
  • Sophie Thibeault had a chance in the 13th minute when Brooke Birrell played a pass to Thibeault who fired a shot just wide of the post.
  • A couple of minutes later, Emma Levin had a shot atop the box saved by Wood.
  • In the 27th minute, Thibeault fired a long-distance shot, but her shot was saved.
  • The Tigers had three goals called back for offsides early in the second half.
  • In the 63rd minute, the Tribe were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Gabriella Kurtas fired the shot far post, but Riley Melendez made an outstretched save to keep the score tied.
  • Maja Hansson scored her goal of the season off a corner kick to give Towson a 1-0 lead. Levin played in a cross into the middle of the box and Hansson headed the ball past Wood in the 73rd minute.
  • Chiara Menegatti tried to double Towson's lead a few minutes later, but her shot was saved.
  • William & Mary tried to find an equalizer late, but the Tigers held strong and picked up a 1-0 victory to wrap up the regular season.
