24-Point Fourth Quarter Sends Towson Football Past Campbell for Third Straight Win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Scoring three touchdowns in the opening 3:15 of the fourth quarter, the Towson University football team powered past Campbell 45-23 for its third consecutive win to conclude the regular season.

Towson (7-5, 5-3 CAA), up five going into the final quarter, scored on the first fourth quarter drive then scored two more touchdowns quickly off an interception and recovered outside kick to surge past Campbell (3-9, 1-7 CAA).

With the victory, Towson earns its first seven-win season and winning season since 2019.

Key Stats:
  • Towson earned 372 yards of total offense, over 100 more than Campbell at 270.
  • The Tigers finished with five touchdowns on the ground, including three for Tyrell Greene Jr. on nine rushes for 41 yards.  Devin Matthews rushed 15 times for 134 yards, averaging 8.9 yards a carry, and a touchdown while Christopher Watkins had eight carries for 28 yards and a score.
  • Sean Brown passed 10-for-15 for 156 yards, a touchdown and an interception.  Jaceon Doss had the score on two catches for 51 yards while Carter Runyon got two catches for 55 yards.
  • Defensively, Will Middleton had seven tackles and an interception while Rodney Roane Jr. finished with six tackles and a sack.
  • For Campbell, Mark Chandler II was 13-for-27 for 135 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, adding 39 yards rushing.  Logan Livermon finished with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception.
How it Happened
  • Towson won the toss and deferred.  The second play saw Mark Biggins rush up the middle and avoid tackles for a 30-yard gain into Towson territory.  After a QB scramble to the Towson 27, Towson held on defense to force a field goal attempt.  Connor Lytton converted the 47-yard attempt to put the home team up 3-0 in the opening 3:42.
  • After a Towson punt, both teams exchanged the ball via interception, with a Myles Brodie pick being reserved on the next play by a Logan Livermon pick on Towson to the Towson 28.  Nchabanu Fortaboh and Rion Roseborough combined to stop Biggins for a loss of three on the first play to stall the drive.  Lytton kicked a 42-yard field goal for a 6-0 Campbell lead 6:20 into the game.
  • Towson responded on the next chance, hitting Campbell's middle with a couple of rushes, then Sam Reynolds converting a third down on a seven-yard pass to the flat.  Two plays later, Devin Matthews burst up the middle and past everyone for the 54-yard touchdown to push Towson ahead 7-6 with 6:27 to go in the first.
  • Campbell had a long drive get to the Towson 31, where the Tiger pass rush forced two incompletions.  The 49-yard field goal attempt missed right as Towson took over into the second quarter, but a sack fumble stopped the drive and forced a punt.  The other way, a 28-yard pass down the middle to Sincere Brown and a 19-yard drop-off pass to VJ Wlkins put Campbell inside the end zone, where again Towson stopped the drive, aided by a Branson Peters tackle on a screen for a loss of three.  Lytton hit the 28-yard field goal to put the home team back ahead 9-7 with 8:31 left in the second.
  • Towson came down field on a deep pass to Carter Runyon down the sideline for 49 yards and a spot on the Campbell 25.  A couple of short passes and Campbell penalties brought Towson to the 3, where Tyrell Greene Jr. finished the drive on the three-yard rush for a 14-9 Towson lead with 3:19 to go in the half.
  • Campbell started on its own 49 on the next drive and returned to the red zone on a 29-yard pass across the middle to Brown.  Again Towson's defense held, where Towson tipped the field goal attempt for the miss.  Towson led 14-9 at the break.
  • Into the second half, a Campbell unsportsmanlike penalty continued the Towson drive and put the Tigers on the Campbell 49.  Two plays later, a deep shot to Jaceon Doss was initially ruled incomplete, than reversed by replay for a 45-yard touchdown, giving Towson a 21-9 lead with 11:36 to go in the third.
  • Towson halted Campbell's next drive around midfield, but a muffed punt gave Campbell back the ball at the Towson 4.  Two plays later, Biggins powered into the end zone for the one-yard touchdown to make it 21-16 Towson with 6:44 to go in the third.
  • Matthews got an early 12-yard break through the middle for Towson, but the drive could not go further and Towson punted away.  Towson forced a three-and-out and took back over on midfield.
  • Into the fourth, Matthews bolted for 34 yards to reach the Campbell 2.  After being backed up to the seven, Towson scored on a Greene Jr. rush through the right side for the seven-yard score for a 28-16 Towson advantage 2:05 into the quarter.
  • Immediately, Will Middleton intercepted a tipped pass to start Towson on the Campbell 30.  Greene Jr. barreled forward, taking would-be-tacklers and going 30 yards to the end zone.  After the touchdown, multiple flags were thrown on Campbell, enforcing 30 yards of penalties on the kickoff.  Towson kicked short and recovered the onside kick.  Two plays later, Christopher Watkins burst through the middle and scored on the 10-yard rush for the touchdown and a 42-16 Towson lead with 11:45 to play.
  • After a Campbell three-and-out, Towson drove down with Carlos Davis at quarterback, stopping the drive at the Campbell 24.  Keegan Vaughan knocked through the 41-yard field goal attempt to push Towson up 45-16.
  • Campbell scored a touchdown on the following drive.  Towson held the rest of the way to win 45-23.
