TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University football team allowed just three points in the first 57:46 of the game as the Tigers defeated Hampton 27-10 on their return to Johnny Unitas® Stadium.
Towson (5-5, 3-3 CAA) shut out Hampton (5-5, 3-3 CAA) in the first 40 minutes as the Tigers led 27-0 at halftime, including a 62-yard pick six by
Daniel Raymond. The Tigers scored five times in the first half, all on drives of 1:30 or less.
Key Stats:
- Hampton had 298 yards of total offense to Towson's 198. Towson had more passing yards with 141 to Hampton's 132.
- The defense had to defend against Hampton's 41:55 time of possession. Daniel Raymond earned his pick six on a 62-yard return, adding five tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Will Middleton led Towson in tackles with 12 while Nchabanu Fortaboh tallied seven tackles and 1.5 sacks.
- Towson's offense scored on all four red zone chances. Sean Brown was 11-for-20 for 141 yards, a touchdown and an interception. John Dunmore and Jaceon Doss each had two catches for 45 and 42 yards respectively. On the ground, Tyrell Greene Jr. rushed for 38 yards on 10 carries.
- Keegan Vaughan knocked down both field goal attempts from 24 yards and 32 yards respectively.
- For Hampton, Chris Zellous was 14-for-26 for 132 yards and an interception at quarterback, adding 33 yards on the ground with a rushing touchdown. Corey Yeoman led the Pirates with eight tackles and a forced fumble.
How it Happened
- A early fumble by Towson gave Hampton the ball on the Towson 31. Towson forced fourth down and five, where Shafeek Smith broke up a pass to force a turnover on downs. Towson pushed towards the 46 but had to punt.
- Hampton had a couple of runs and short passes, but Towson held to force a punt. John Dunmore returned the punt 14 yards to get Towson's drive started on its own 49. After a rush play, Sean Brown threw down the sideline to Jaceon Doss for 33 yards, then he faked out the defense for a 12-yard run and a touchdown to put Towson up 7-0 with 5:39 left in the first.
- On first down on the Hampton 27, Malcolm Mays's rollout pass was intercepted by Myles Brodie and return to the Hampton 12. Two plays later, Brown dropped a ball into the back of the end zone for Carter Runyon for the eight-yard score to make it 14-0 Towson with 3:13 to play in the first.
- Towson had another short field after a defensive line sack and Jacob Zollar getting a hand on the punt to start the Tigers on the Hampton 38. Into the second quarter, Towson got to the Hampton 7 but had a pass broken-up in the end zone. Keegan Vaughan knocked down the 24-yard attempt for a 17-0 Towson lead seconds into the second.
- Hampton kept on the rushing attack, but Towson's pass rush continued to force problems and made Hampton punt. But on Towson's drive, an intercepted deep pass gave the ball back to the Pirates. Hampton pushed to midfield and set up third and three on the Towson 42. Chris Zellous's pass was deflected in the air by Kam Snell and caught by Daniel Raymond for the interception. Raymond raced down the Hampton sideline for 62 yards and the end zone, sending Towson up 24-0 with 4:49 to play in the half.
- Hampton drove to the Towson 30 but had a turnover on downs. With 23 seconds left in the half, a 40-yard pass to Dunmore and a roughing the passer penalty set up Towson on the Hampton 15. Vaughan knocked through the 32-yard field goal to send Towson up 27-0 at the half.
- Into the second half, Hampton put together a drive of 9:53, including 16 consecutive rushes. At third and goal on the Towson 8, Snell and Dion Crews-Harris stopped Tymere Robinson on the three. Hampton kicked through the field goal to get on the board as Towson led 27-3.
- Towson went three-and-out, and into the fourth quarter, held back Hampton on a Nchabanu Fortaboh sack to force a punt. But, Brown was sacked and lost the ball as Hampton took over on the Towson 3. Towson's defense stood strong, not allowing a yard forward. Hampton attempted a field goal with the try slamming the left upright.
- Towson ran a drive but punted. Another long drive for Hampton this time resulted in a touchdown on a Zellous three-yard QB keeper. Towson recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock as the Tigers won 27-10.

- This is the fourth time this season where Towson's defense has held an opponent to 14 points or fewer, including three times in league play.
