Towson Baseball Felled at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Towson University baseball team fell, 16-1, to Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon at F.A.U. Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
 
Towson (1-6) got out to a lead in the first, with a pair of singles and two walks bringing in a run for the Tigers. Florida Atlantic (4-2) responded in the home half with four runs on five hits to take the lead. The Owls pushed the lead to seven in the second inning on three hits. A single through the left side in the bottom of the third gave Florida Atlantic a 10-1 lead. The Owls pushed the lead to 14 in the sixth inning with five runs on five hits. Florida Atlantic got one more run across in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, leading to a 16-1 final.

  • Florida Atlantic outhit the Tigers, 15-5, on the afternoon.
  • Max Simpson (0-2) took the loss for Towson, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in 1.0 inning of work with one walk given.
  • Tyler Murphy (1-0) registered the win in the start for the Owls, surrendering one earned run on three hits in 4.0 innings pitched with three strikeouts and four walks allowed.
 
How it Happened:
  • A pair of singles to start the game followed by back-to-back walks plated the first run of the game for Towson.
  • Florida Atlantic responded in the bottom of the frame, starting with a single up the middle with a runner on second to tie the game. A hit batter and single loaded the bases before McKenna's single to right field gave the Owls a 2-1 lead. A groundout and single in the next two at-bats brought home one run each to make it a 4-1 game.
  • Rich led off the bottom of the second with a home run for the Owls' fifth run of the game. After a single to follow, Justin Rebok relieved Max Simpson. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly to push the lead to five. Two batters later, a single through the right side and groundout scored one each to make it 8-1.
  • The Owls added two more in the third on a single through the left side, but the Tigers caught a runner at third to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls plated five more runs on five hits and two errors. All five runs scored came on consecutive singles in the frame.
  • Florida Atlantic added one more run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for a 16-1 final.
 
On Deck:
The Tigers go back on the road next week to face the N.C. State Wolfpack in Raleigh, N.C., in a four-game set from March 1-3. Saturday will feature a doubleheader.
