Tigers Fall to UMBC in Midweek Tilt

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team faced the UMBC Retrievers on Tuesday afternoon, falling 12-4 at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
UMBC (2-10) opened the scoring with three runs on two hits in the first. The Retrievers added three more in the second on four hits. Towson (3-12) cut the deficit to three in the fifth inning. UMBC extended their lead to five runs in the next frame on three hits. The Tigers got one run back in the seventh inning on Jordan Peyton's single through the right side. Best's single to left field made it a 9-4 game. UMBC added three runs in the ninth inning, scoring two on a double and the third on a bases-loaded walk for a 12-4 final in favor of the visitors.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Justin Rebok (0-1) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits while issuing two walks.
  • UMBC starter Logan Wiley (1-1) recorded the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while issuing two walks. Wiley added two strikeouts in the start. Sam Daniels recorded the save with the tying run on deck when he entered the game in the seventh inning.
 
How it Happened:
  • UMBC scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead. Following back-to-back walks, Ryan's single to left field scored the first. Later in the inning, Pratt's single to center field scored two more.
  • The Retrievers extended their lead in the second inning. Swenda's single to left field with runners on second and third extended the lead to four runs. Trythall's single up the middle made it a 5-0 game. UMBC added another run on a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.
  • Towson cut the deficit to three in the fifth inning. Jack Lawrence's double with a runner on first gave the Tigers their first run. Lawrence scored on an error on the next at-bat. Two batters later, Jordan Peyton's sacrifice bunt two batters later scored Cole Stefano to make it a 6-3 game.
  • UMBC got two more runs in the next frame, Taylor's single to left field with a runner on third base extended the lead. A hit batter with the bases loaded later in the frame made it an 8-3 game.
  • The Tigers answered in the seventh, scoring a run on Peyton's single through the right side with runners on the corners.
  • The Retrievers added another run in the eighth on Best's RBI-single to left field.
  • UMBC posted three more runs in the ninth inning, scoring two on Swenda's double down the left field line. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning gave the Retrievers a 12-4 lead.
  • The Tigers couldn't answer in the home half for a 12-4 final at John B. Schuerholz Park.
