Big Plays at the Plate and In the Field Lead Towson Softball to 8-0 Win Against UMBC

TOWSON, Md. – Towson softball used a good all-around performance in an 8-0 win against county-rival UMBC in five innings. The Tigers got big performances from Mackenzie Lake in the field as well as Cara Bohner and Alyssa Bostley who each drove in a pair of runs.

Towson (15-24) ended a two-game losing streak behind 10 hits and a triple and double play in the field from Lake.

Key Stats: How It Happened:
  • UMBC got things going in the first getting a pair of runners on, but Mackenzie Lake caught a line drive, stepped on second and tossed to first for a triple play.
  • Both teams had a chance in the second inning getting a runner to third, but neither team could cash in.
  • Lake would come up big in the field once more in the third inning. This time Lake caught a line drive and threw to first for a double play.
  • Towson broke through in the third with a six-run inning. Cori Jones led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a Taylor Broadbent RBI single to make it 1-0. Broadbent would later score on a Bohner RBI single that forced a pitching change.
  • Mackenzie Lake would come home just pitches later on a wild pitch with Bohner scoring on a Canesi RBI single. The runs would continue with Bostley doubling home Canesi and Kristin Toland to make it 6-0 after three.
  • The Tigers would add another run in the fourth with Lake scoring again, this time on a Cara Bohner sacrifice fly.
  • Towson would get the game-clinching run in the fifth with Canesi scoring on an error to give the Tigers an 8-0 win.
On Deck:
  • Towson will continue their busy week with a three-game CAA series against Elon this weekend. The Tigers and Phoenix will play Friday through Sunday with Friday starting at 2 p.m., and the last two games starting at 1 p.m.
