Heckelman Hits Two Home Runs, Towson Baseball Topples the Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (10-34, 3-15 CAA) faced Mount St. Mary's (13-28-1, 7-8 MAAC) Wednesday afternoon at E.T. Straw Family Stadium, toppling the Mountaineers 19-8 in Emmitsburg, Md.
 
Through their first three chances at the plate, the Tigers got out to a 9-0 lead. The Mount got on the board in the bottom half on an RBI single through the left side. The Mountaineers scored five runs on two hits in the fifth, started by Wockley's lead-off home run. The Mount added two runs on two hits in the sixth to pull within one run of the Tigers. Brian Heckelman hit his second home run of the day in top of the seventh, a two-run shot, to push the Towson lead to 11-8. Jordan Peyton doubled down the left field line two batters later to add another run. Towson posted five runs in the eighth, scoring on a Wagner single, two hit batters, a wild pitch and a groundout. Heckelman added two more runs in the ninth on an RBI double, making it a 19-8 Towson lead. The Mountaineers hit a one-out single in the ninth before the final two outs were recorded for a 19-8 final in favor of the Tigers.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson reliever Jake Michel (3-2) recorded the win with no runs allowed on one hit batter in 1.0 inning pitched. Michel added one strikeout.
  • Mount St. Mary's starter TJ Curley (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and one walk issued in one inning pitched. Curley added one strikeout.
  • The Tigers outhit the Mountaineers 17-9 in the game, with five Tigers recorded multiple hits.
 
How it Happened:
  • With the bases loaded in the top of the first, Devan Barnett's groundout to second base drove in a run to give the Tigers the early lead. Chris Akers followed with a double to left field to score two more, making it a 3-0 Towson advantage. Later in the frame, Jeremy Wagner hit a sacrifice fly to center field to add a fourth run in the frame.
  • In the top of the second, Brian Heckelman, Elijah Dickerson and Jordan Peyton hit back-to-back-to-back solo home runs to extend the Tiger lead to 7-0.
  • Heckelman's two-out walk and Dickerson's double to left center put runners on second and third in the top half of the third. Heckelman scored on a wild pitch, moving Dickerson to third. Peyton followed with a single through the left side to drive in the ninth Towson run of the game.
  • In the home half, Seeker singled through the left side with a runner on second base to put the Mount on the board.
  • The Mount's Wockley hit a lead-off home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Following a walk and two hit batters, Jordan Luton came in to relieve Tyler Russo. Landwehr followed with a base hit that drove in two. A third run scored on a throwing error on the play. Stecko followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-6 game.
  • With runners on the corners in the bottom of the sixth, Long's single to right field scored both, cutting the Towson lead to one.
  • Heckelman hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, his second of the game, to extend the Towson lead to 11-8. After Dickerson's single up the middle, Jordan Peyton's double down the left field line drove in Dickerson for a four-run Towson advantage.
  • With runners on second and third in the top of the eighth, Jeremy Wagner's single through the left side pushed the lead to five. Back-to-back bases loaded hit batters added two more runs before a wild pitch added another. Bryce Frederick knocked in the final run of the frame on an RBI groundout to the pitcher, making it a 17-8 game.
  • Brian Heckelman hit a two-run double in the ninth, adding two more runs for the Tigers.
  • After a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, the final two putouts were made for a 19-8 final in favor of the Tigers.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Heckelman picked up career marks with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored on the afternoon. He matched a career-high with three hits.
  • Jordan Peyton had a career-high four hits in the game and picked up his third home run in the last two games. Peyton matched his season-high with two runs scored.
  • Dickerson (21), Peyton (13), Frederick (11), Stefano (10) and Heckelman (5) all picked up multi-hit games.
  • Dickerson (6), Peyton (7), Akers (2), Wagner (5), and Heckelman (6) each picked up multiple RBI games.

The Tigers will host Charleston in a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series at John B. Schuerholz Park starting Friday at 3 p.m.
