TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon in the second on three games on Senior Day. The Tigers (15-39, 5-20 CAA) sent their seniors out with a 2-1 victory over the Aggies (25-28, 9-17 CAA) at John B. Schuerholz Park.
Brian Heckelman got the scoring started in the second, scoring
Cole Stefano from first on a double to left field. In his second at-bat of the game, Heckelman launched one over the left field fence to extend the Tiger lead. In the top of the sixth, Jackson's sacrifice fly to left field cut the Tiger lead to one. Tiger pitchers allowed five baserunners in the final three frames but held the Aggies scoreless. With one out in the ninth,
Casey Bishop stepped on third base and threw it across the diamond for the double play, securing the 2-1 Tiger victory.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Matt Lynch (1-0) recorded the win in his scoreless five-inning outing with four hits allowed, striking out three. Luis Rivera (2) recorded the save in the scoreless final frame, surrendering two hits. Rivera notched one strikeout.
- North Carolina A&T starter Angel Ortiz (3-4) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks surrendered in 6.2 innings pitched. Ortiz added four strikeouts.
- The Tigers outhit the Aggies, 9-8. Three Tigers recorded multi-hit games (Peyton, Stefano, Heckelman).
How it Happened:
- North Carolina A&T threatened in the top of the first with a pair of two-out base runners before Lynch retired Jackson for the final out of the frame.
- In the bottom of the second, Cole Stefano hit a one-out single through the right side. Brian Heckelman followed with an double to left field, scoring Stefano from first.
- In his next plate appearance in the fourth, Heckelman hit a solo home run to left field to make it a 2-0 game.
- With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, North Carolina A&T's Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the deficit in half.
- Tiger relief pitchers combined to allow five baserunners in the final three frames. With runners on second and third with one out in the top of the ninth, Casey Bishop stepped on third and retired Wood at first base for a 2-1 final in favor of the Tigers on Senior Day.
Inside the Numbers:
- Brian Heckelman recorded his eighth multi-RBI game of the season, tying him for second on the team with Bryce Frederick.
- Matt Lynch recorded his first collegiate win in his nineteenth appearance, six start, of the year.
- Jordan Peyton picked up his 11th multi-hit game in his last 13 starts. He's raised his batting average from .272 on April 22 to .336 following today's game.
