TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (11-36, 3-17 CAA) faced Charleston on Saturday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park, falling 17-5 to the Cougars (33-11, 16-4 CAA).
Charleston jumped out to an 8-0 lead through the first frame and a half. Towson responded in the home half with three runs to cut into the deficit. Neaves homered in the top of the third to extend the lead to 9-3.
Jeremy Wagner hit a single to left center with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third to add two runs for the Tigers. The Cougars added four runs on two hits and an error in the top of the fourth. The Cougars added on more in the fifth on a single to left field. Charleston posted three runs in the ninth on three hits to extend the lead to 17-5.
Jordan Peyton led off the bottom of the ninth with a double to left center before the final three Tigers went down in order for a 17-5 final.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Jake Michel (3-3) took the loss on eight earned runs allowed on six hits and two walks issued in 1.2 innings pitched. Michel struck out two.
- Charleston reliever Emmett Bice (5-3) earned the win with no runs allowed on three hits and one walk issued in 5.1 innings of work. Bice added five strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- After a lead-off hit batter in the top of the first, Baumhofer hit a home run to left center to give Charleston a two-run edge. Following two walks later in the frame, Madden homered to center field to make it a 5-0 game.
- With a runner on third in the second, Mathis picked up an RBI single to left field. Harlan's single later in the frame drove in another run. Madden followed with an RBI double to center field to make it 8-0.
- Taye Robinson led off the bottom of the second with a home run to left field to put the Tigers on the board. A pair of wild pitches with runners on scored two more later in the frame.
- Neaves hit a solo home run to left in the third to push the Charleston lead to 9-3.
- After three walks loaded the bases in the bottom half, Jeremy Wagner knocked home to two runs on a single to left center.
- Charleston added four runs in the top of the fourth, two on Harlan's home run to left field and two on Neaves' triple to right center later in the frame.
- With runners on the corners in the top of the fifth, Madden's single to left field drove in a Cougar run to make it 14-5.
- Charleston added three runs on three hits in the ninth, scoring one on Neaves' second home run, one on Harlan's single to center and one on a bases-loaded hit batter.
- After Peyton's lead-off double in the bottom of the ninth, the next three batters went down in order for a 17-5 final at Schuerholz Park.
