Menegatti’s Late Equalizer Secures a Draw for Towson Women’s Soccer against Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Towson University women's soccer team took on the Penn Quakers on Sunday afternoon in Penn's home opener. The Tigers (2-2-4) drew the Quakers (0-3-3) 1-1 after Chiara Menegatti scored her first collegiate goal in the 86th minute to secure Towson's third consecutive draw.
 
In the first half, Penn applied early pressure, but Riley Melendez made six saves. The Quakers scored at the end of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. In the second half, the Tigers created chances, but could not find the back of the net. Melendez made a penalty save in the 83rd minute, then Chiara Menegatti scored less than three minutes later to secure a 1-1 draw.

  • In the 12th minute, Emma Levin played in a cross off a corner and the ball bounced to Brooke Birrell who had her shot saved by Penn's Annabel Austen.
  • Penn continued to apply pressure, but Melendez kept the Quakers scoreless.
  • In the 22nd minute, Penn was awarded a penalty. Melendez made a brilliant save driving to her right to deny thre Quakers.
  • In the 39th minute, Sophie Thibeault fired a shot from atop the box, but was saved by Austen.
  • Penn found the back of the net in the 40th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 63rd minute, Kale'a Perry ­­­­fired a shot from outside the box, but Austen made the save.
  • In the 68th minute, Malin Bernt Schöps had her shot saved off the line and the ball fell to Chiara Menegatti at the top of the box. Menegatti's shot went just over the crossbar as the Tigers continued to look for an equalizer.
  • Penn received another penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but Melendez dove to her left and saved the shot for her ninth save of the match.
  • In the 86th minute, Towson found its equalizer. Thibeault played a pass across the goal and Menegatti deflected the ball in off her right foot to tie the score at one.
  • A minute later, Levin fired a shot from atop the box, but her attempt was saved.
  • In the 89th minute, Thibeault fired a shot near post off a Birrell cross, but Austen pushed the shot out for a corner.
  • Off the ensuing corner kick, Rebecca Groseibl had her shot saved by Austen as the Tigers drew the Quakers 1-1.
