Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short for Field Hockey Against Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University field hockey team closed out the regular season at Hofstra with a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) playoff spot on the line. The Tiger's couldn't complete a fourth quarter comeback as its 2025 season came to an end following a 4-2 loss to the Pride.

Records:
Towson – 6-12, 2-3 CAA
Hofstra – 9-8, 2-3 CAA

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • In the first quarter the Tigers held possession and got a free hit at the 25-yard line which was taken by Rosemarie Staal who carried into the circle and took a shot that was deflected into the goal by Olivia Miller to give Towson a 1-0 lead.
  • Less than a minute later Hofstra got the ball into the left side of the circle, and a deflection sent the ball to Kelly Levengood who the Tigers kept from scoring, but Hofstra was awarded a penalty stroke which was converted by Teresa Karoff to tie the game 1-1 entering the second quarter.
  • Midway through the second period Gwenn van Dijk held the ball around Towson's 25-yard line and fired a pass into the top of the circle and towards the middle of the goal, a lunging Jaime Lewis tapped the ball around the pad of Tessa Scheenstra and Hofstra took a 2-1 lead.
  • A few minutes later Towson brought the ball down the right sideline and Ella Kaufman earned a free hit that she left for Gianna Tripodi who sent a pass to Kaufman in the circle who controlled and shot but Luci Hollister made the save and Hofstra held its 2-1 lead into halftime.
  • With nine minutes left in the third quarter Hofstra took possession and earned a free hit at the left side of the 25-yard line which was taken by Efremia Geralis who slipped a ball behind the Towson defense for Pilar Penaloza who tipped the ball past Scheenstra at the near post to make it 3-1 Hofstra.
  • A minute left Hofstra again attacked from the left side and a pass was tipped into the circle and found Lewis at the far corner of circle; Lewis got past a pair of defenders and avoided a sweeping Sheenstra before scoring to push the Pride's lead to 4-1 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Towson earned a corner early in the fourth and the delivery came to Miller who carried towards the far byline and found Arden Hunteman who passed across the goal and Lydia Bennett knocked it in to cut the lead to 4-2.
  • The Tiger's swapped Scheenstra for an extra attacker with three and a half minutes to play but couldn't close the gap any further and Towson's season ended with a 4-2 loss to Hofstra.
