Volleyball Snatches Victory from Hofstra in Regular Season Finale

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University volleyball team faced Hofstra on Saturday afternoon in the team's final match of the regular season.
 
Towson (21-6, 12-4 CAA) and Hofstra (19-3, 11-3 CAA) picked up on Saturday where the teams left off on Friday, making for another exciting match in Hempstead. Each team won two sets through the first four, sending the match to a fifth and final. Down 9-7 in the final frame, the Tigers scored six unanswered points to claim a 13-9 lead and went on to win the final set, 15-11.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson held decisive hitting edges in its sets won. In the deciding frame, the Tigers outhit the Pride .227-.000.
  • The Tigers had a well-balanced attack, with four players finishing with 14 kills and two more with at least seven in the match.
  • Five Tigers finished with nine or more digs in the match compared to Hofstra's two.
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers opened the match with a modest 5-2 lead. Malinah Purcell-Telefoni, Taylor Pagan, Ella Sanders and Erin Brothers (2) had kills to start the match.
  • Hofstra responded with wins on the next five points, giving the Pride a 7-5 lead.
  • The Tigers followed that with three unanswered points to reclaim the lead at 8-7.
  • Hofstra answered with a 9-3 run, claiming the lead at 16-11 in the set.
  • Down 19-12 later in the frame, the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to retake the lead once again at 22-21.
  • Pagan, Sanders and Sarah Callender had kills on the Tigers final three points of the set to win 25-23.
  • The Pride jumped out to an early 9-3 lead to begin the second set.
  • The Tigers answered with a 7-3 run to shrink the deficit to two at 12-10.
  • Towson got the deficit down to one at 15-14 before Hofstra's five unanswered points pushed the lead back to six.
  • The Black & Gold battled back over the final few points but could not erase the deficit, giving the Pride a 25-20 win.
  • The teams traded short runs through much of the early part of set three.

  • After one Hofstra point, the Tigers scored six unanswered points to claim a 13-9 lead in the set.
  • Towson surrendered two points to Hofstra before winning the final two points of the match to win the final set, 15-11.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Taylor Pagan amassed 14 kills and 12 digs, marking her first double-double since Sept. 12 vs. Iona.
  • Erin Brothers posted 14 kills on a .391 hitting percentage. She stands second in the league with a .379 hitting percentage on the year.
  • Maisie Jesse matched her season-high of 34 assists.
 
Next Game
Towson has already punched its ticket to the CAA Championship, hosted at SECU Arena, from Nov. 20-22. Seeding for the tournament is still undecided as the Tigers have a bye next week in the final weekend of league play.
