CONWAY, S.C. – The Towson University softball team played two more games in the Battle at the beach hosted by Coastal Carolina on Saturday. The Tigers lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9-0 then fell 13-9 in eight innings to Marist.
GAME 1: Towson 0, Notre Dame 9
Key Stats:
- Madyson Peters and Elizabeth Yoskowitz had Towson's only two hits of the game.
- Amanda Medina started on the mound pitching 3.0 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs in the loss. Alyssa Bostley pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
- For Notre Dame, Kaia Cortes had 2 hits and 3 RBIs; Emily Tran, Sydny Poeck and Avery Houlihan had 1 hit and 1 RBI each. Kami Kamzik started and pitched 4.0 innings allowing only two hits and no runs with eight strikeouts while picking up the win.
How it Happened:
- Towson went down in order in the 1st and only a walk kept the Irish from doing the same in the bottom half of the inning.
- In the bottom of the second, an error, single and walk loaded the bases with one out for the Irish who scored the first run of the game on an Avery Houlihan single. The Tigers got a force out at home for the second out, but a bases-loaded HBP and a Kaia Cortes bases clearing double put Notre Dame up 5-0 after two innings.
- Elizabeth Yoskowitz singled for Towson's first hit in the third inning, but Taylor Broadbent lined out to end the half-inning.
- In the bottom half of the 3rd, a HBP and a single put two runners on with one out for Notre Dame. Sydny Poek singled to score a run, Emily Tran singled scoring two more and a fourth run scored on a fielding error to make it 9-0 Notre Dame.
- Madyson Peters singled with one out in the 4th but no runs scored for the Tigers.
- Alyssa Bostley capped off a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout.
- Towson worked two walks in the top of the 5th but Brianne Weiss struck out the side to end the game 9-0.
GAME 2: Towson 9, Notre Dame 13
Key Stats:
- Kristin Toland hit 2-3 with a double, her third homerun of the season and 3 RBIs.
- Briyana Wright hit a 2-run homerun, her first as a Tiger and drew a pair of walks.
- Freshman Mackenzie Gorzyca hit 2-4 with a two-run triple in her first career start.
- Grace Franczyk hit an RBI double and drew a walk.
- Elizabeth Yoskowitz and Kaci Benton also recorded hits.
- Olivia Trombley made her second start of the weekend, the freshman pitched 7.0 innings allowing 14 hits and 9 earned runs while striking out 3 and took a no decision. Kayla Pilson receives the loss after pitching an inning of relief and allowing 3 hits and 3 earned runs.
- For Marist, Isabella Manory hit 4-5 with a homerun and 5 RBIs, Maddie Pleasants hit 2-4 with a homerun and 3 RBIs. Miah McDonald hit 3-5 with a pair of doubles, Ronni Howard had a hit and 3 RBIs. Peyton Pusey had 2 hits and Maddie Gore and Sienna Kunze had 1 hit and 1 RBI each. Anna Sidlowski started and pitched 1.0 inning allowing 3 earned runs. Kiley Myers pitched 3.0 innings of relief allowing 2 earned runs and striking out 3 while picking up the victory. Emma Bayor threw 2.0 hitless innings of relief.
How it Happened:
- The Red Foxes led off the game with a bunt single, then Maddie Pleasants hit a 2-run homerun to put Marist up early.
- Towson responded in the bottom of the inning, Jenna Giattino was hit by a pitch and Briyana Wright walked then Kristin Toland hit a 3-run homer to put the Tigers ahead after one.
- Marist equalized in the top of the 3rd, a fielder's choice and a walk led to a 2-out single from Ronnie Howard to tie the game at 3.
- In the bottom of the inning, Toland and Grace Franczyk led off with a pair of doubles to retake the lead for Towson. An Addie Ferguson walk was followed by a Mackenzie Gorczyca triple to score two. Gorczyca scored on a wild pitch to cap off a 4-run inning for the Tigers who now held a 7-3 lead.
- Marist struck back in the top of the 4th putting two on base with one out before Pleasants singled to get a run back then Isabella Manory hit a 3-run homerun to tie the game at 7.
- In the top of the 6th, Miah McDonald doubled, advanced on a sac fly then scored from a Manory single to give the Foxes the lead.
- However, Kaci Benton led off the next inning for Towson with a pinch hit single, then Wright hit a 2-run homerun, her first at Towson, to put the Tigers ahead 9-8 going into the 7th inning.
- Marist once again had a response as in the top of the 7th an infield single and a double put runners on second and third with one out. Maddie Gore then hit a game tying sac fly. The game then went into extra innings.
- With a runner starting on second in the eighth, the Foxes led off the inning with a single then took the lead on a wild pitch. Then three consecutive batters singled, tripled and grounded out to score 3 more runs and put Marist up 13-9. The Red Foxes closed the game out in the bottom of the inning and Towson fell 13-9.
