Constantinides Becomes Program’s All-Time Faceoff Wins Leader in No. 18/16 Towson Men’s Lacrosse Defeat at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 18/16 Towson University men's lacrosse team saw Matt Constantinides become the all-time faceoff wins leader in program history in a 14-10 defeat at Navy on Sunday afternoon.

Towson (0-3) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, engaging in a game of runs against Navy (3-0), a team receiving votes in the polls.  Navy responded with its own 8-1 run to go up four, then Towson again scored three straight to pull within one midway through the second quarter, but Navy held the lead the rest of the way.

With Constantinides's 11th faceoff win of the game with 1:39 to play, he has 584 career faceoff victories, making him Towson's new all-time program leader.

Key Stats:
  • Towson outshot Navy 46-42 in the game, including 28-15 in the second half.
  • Mikey Weisshaar led Towson in points with five off three goals and two assists, adding three ground balls.  Chop Gallagher had two goals and an assist.
  • In his second career start in goal, Matt Nilan got the loss with nine saves and 14 goals allowed.  Sam Morin scooped six ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • For Navy, William Goers tallied four goals, two assists and three ground balls off the bench.  The win went to Dan Daly with 13 saves and 10 goals allowed in cage.
How It Happened:
  • Matt Nilan got the start in goal for Towson and saved a low Navy shot on the first possession.  From there, Towson scored three consecutive goals, taking advantage of two Navy faceoff violations.  Mikey Weisshaar passed across the goal circle for Chop Gallagher on a goal hitting the corner followed by Towson getting two shots on the doorstep for goals to Bode Maurer and Weisshaar for a 3-0 lead 4:11 into the game.
  • Navy called a timeout and regrouped, leading to the Mids to tie the game with a 3-0 run.  Ronan Fitzpatrick put Towson back ahead in an unsettled situation off a clear to make it 4-3 Towson with 4:45 left in the first.
  • Navy ended the first quarter on a 3-0 run to lead 6-4 after one.
  • Navy had a turnover on offense but Towson failed to clear on the ride.  Navy added two more goals to lead 8-4.
  • The game of runs continued as Towson fired back.  Weisshaar scored on a low shot to end Navy's streak, then two more Towson goals, another off a clear from Joe Petro to Fitzpatrick, then Alex Vieni running from right to left and scoring on that run to pull the Tigers within one at 8-7.
  • Play went back and forth for several minutes as Towson's defense held off a man-down situation.  Navy scored two goals in the final 1:23 of the half to be up 10-7 at the break.
  • Into the third quarter, Towson's defense held off some quick strikes from Navy with a couple of low saves.  Evan Boswell netted a goal towards the end of the shot clock to pull Towson within two at 10-8 Navy with 10:27 in the third.
  • Both sides kept using the shot clock as Towson held off another man-down situation to Navy, but the Mids defense held against Towson as Dan Daly made several saves.  Navy added a goal back on a low shot as the home team led 11-8 after three.
  • Into the fourth, Towson fired away on cage but could not connect early despite a man-up chance.  Navy added an insurance goal with 9:09 left to lead 12-8.
  • Towson got offensive chances but could not connect despite a four-shot possession.  But after Navy scored a goal, Weisshaar and Gallagher hit back-to-back goals to pull Towson within three with 1:53 left, but that is as close as the Tigers got.  Navy scored on an empty net and won 14-10.
Inside the Numbers:
