Monmouth Jumps Out Early, Holds Lead to Win Rubber Match vs. Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team concluded its first home Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series of the season vs. Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
The Hawks (13-14, 3-3 CAA) jumped out to an early lead, scoring six in the first and three in the second. The Tigers (9-19, 2-4 CAA) scored one run in the bottom of the first. Towson found its offensive footing later in the game, scoring two in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the ninth with two runners stranded to fall 10-6 in the series rubber match.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits and three walks without recording an out.
  • Monmouth starter Ryan Mealy (2-0) earned the win with three runs allowed, two earned, on six hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Mealy struck out five. Hawks' reliever Jimmy Wigo (2) got the save, tossing 0.2 perfect innings to secure the victory with the tying run on deck in the ninth.
 
How it Happened
  • Monmouth got out in front in the first inning for the third-straight day, scoring the first run on Caufield's triple to right center with Padden on first base. Two batters later, Andrews reached on a would-be sacrifice fly to right extended the lead to two. After Walsh's walk, Nick Lovarco hit a grand slam to left field, giving the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
  • After Nich Francuzenko's single in the bottom half, he advanced to second on a wild pitch. That allowed Brian Heckelman to score Francuzenko on an RBI single to center field.
  • The Hawks added three runs on four hits in the top of the second, pushing their lead to eight at 9-1. Three-straight hits scored the first two before a one out double from Lovarco.
  • Monmouth extended the lead to 10-1 on Hunt's single through the right side in the top of the sixth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Brett Ahalt singled to right center with two runners in scoring position, putting the second and third runs on the board for the Tigers.
  • Towson tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one on Jordan Peyton's single up the middle and another on Francuzenko's subsequent RBI single to left field, making it a 10-5 game.
  • The Tigers added one run in the bottom of the ninth as Peyton scored Josh Janove from third after his double to left center to begin the frame. The final two batters were retired for a 10-6 win in favor of the Hawks.
                                                           
 
On Deck:
The Tigers will host Coppin State in a mid-week outing on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at John B. Schuerholz Park.
