TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's lacrosse team earned its seventh straight victory on a 14-9 win vs. No. 15 Fairfield to be the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) regular season champion and earn hosting rights for the upcoming CAA Tournament.
 
At 7-7 with 6:53 left in the second quarter, Towson (8-5, 6-0 CAA) held Fairfield (11-2, 4-2 CAA) without a goal for over 33-and-a-half minutes, using a 6-0 run to take the advantage for good.
 
With the victory, Towson has won its last 17 CAA regular season games.
 
The CAA Tournament is set for May 1 and 3 at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.  Towson will play in the first semifinal on Thursday, May 1 at 4 p.m. with the second semifinal set for 7 p.m.  The two semifinal winners will play in the CAA title game on Saturday, May 3 at 3:30 p.m.  Tickets are available for the CAA Tournament here: https://www.gofevo.com/group/2025caamlax
 
Key Stats:

• In a fairly even game in the stats, Towson outshot Fairfield 44-41, with the Stags having a slight edge in faceoffs 14-13.  Towson caused 16 turnovers and had 11 saves to stop Fairfield on defense.
• Mikey Weisshaar tallied up four goals and two assists to lead all players in both categories.  Three other Tigers, Alex Roussel, Owen Scott and Chop Gallagher each had two goals.
• Luke Downs notched the victory in goal with 11 saves, including eight in the second half.  Joe Petro caused five turnovers and scooped up six ground balls.
• On the faceoff-X, Matt Constantinides was 11-for-21, having four ground balls, a goal and an assist.
• For Fairfield, three Stags each had two goals and one assist.  The loss went to Owen Hirsch with eight saves and 14 goals allowed.

How It Happened:

• Fairfield scored first on a catch and shoot to Will Consoli in the opening minutes.  Towson struck back as Mikey Weisshaar scored quickly after a clear, then Elijah Smith raced across the midline and ran for several yards to avoid a double team.  Smith got out of the double team behind the cage and pass off to Weisshaar for the goal, giving Towson a 2-1 lead with 8:28 left in the first quarter.
• Fairfield went on a quick 3-0 run in a span of just under three minutes to go up 4-2.  With 2:26 to go in the first, Towson scored twice in just six seconds as Chuck Matusek swam through a double team to score, then Matt Constantinides won the faceoff, dropped off to Weisshaar for the goal.  Towson and Fairfield were tied at 4-4 after one.
• After Fairfield retook the lead shortly into the second, Towson scored three straight goals to go back ahead.  Chop Gallagher got the open look on the high-to-low shot, Owen Scott scored on a laser off a pass from Weisshaar then Gallagher scored again as the teams passed around the cage.  Towson led 7-5 with 8:16 to go in the second.
• The Stags notched two quick goals to tie the game at 7-7 with 6:53 to play in the second.  Towson took back the lead on a high-to-low catch and shoot shot from Scott with 4:53 to go in the quarter.  Joe Petro and Conor Spagnolli each caused turnovers to hold down the Stags as Towson took an 8-7 lead into the half.
• Constantinides won the second half opening faceoff, barreling forward and scoring his first goal of the season.  For nearly the remainder of the entire period, Towson and Fairfield went scoreless as Luke Downs anchored down in cage with five saves in the quarter, also intercepting a pass for a caused turnover.  In the closing minute, Weisshaar scored his fourth goal off a restart as Towson led 10-7 after three.
• Towson's defense continued to shine in the second half, holding off a man-down situation and scoring the other way on a low shot by Ronan Fitzpatrick.  Downs continued to hold as Towson put two more on the board, a catch and shoot goal for Ryan Schrier and a score by Alex Roussel with 4:39 left as Towson completed the 6-0 run and led 13-7.
• Fairfield broke its scoreless streak of over 33 minutes as Rob Moore scored man-up with 3:26 left.  The two sides exchanged one more goal score, with Roussel scoring his second for Towson, as the Tigers took the win 14-9.

Inside the Numbers:

• Towson is hosting the CAA Tournament for the second straight season.  It is also the second straight year where Towson has won at least seven games in a row.
• Mikey Weisshaar moved to ninth all-time in Towson history in career goals with 97, surpassing Bob Griebe, who had 96 goals from 1972-75.
• Joe Petro earns Towson's first five-caused turnover game since Apr. 28, 2018 when Chad Patterson had five caused turnovers vs. Fairfield.
• Towson currently has two 30-goal scorers this season: Mikey Weisshaar with 38 and Ronan Fitzpatrick with 30.
• Weisshaar has scored at least one point in his last 35 games played.  Chop Gallagher has a least one point in the last 31 games played while Ronan Fitzpatrick has scored in all 12 games he has played.
• Towson has won seven straight games against Fairfield dating back to 2018.
• Towson is a perfect 5-0 when leading after three quarters of play.
