Zizakovic Nets Six Goals as Towson Women’s Lacrosse Defeats William & Mary

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's lacrosse team continued CAA play by welcoming the William & Mary Tribe to Tiger Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers (6-5, 2-2 CAA) defeated the Tribe (5-7, 1-4 CAA) 15-10.
 
Milana Zizakovic led the Tigers with a career-high seven points, scoring a season-high six goals while adding six draw controls and four caused turnovers. Valerie Thompson finished with a career-high six points, totaling three goals and three assists. Katie Roszko had five points on three assists and two goals.
 
Key Stats vs William & Mary:
  • The Tigers finished 17-of-18 on clear attempts while the Tribe went 19-of-28.
  • Towson won the draw control battle 18-9.
  • The Tigers had the edge in ground balls 26-21.
  • Jenna Cardeno made 12 saves while William & Mary's Marin Wilhelm had 14.
 
How It Happened vs William & Mary:
  • Valerie Thompson scored the game's opening goal when Savannah Safchuck found Thompson open cutting to the net who then fired a shot far post that gave the Tigers an early lead.
  • The Tribe evened the score a few minutes later on a free position attempt.
  • The teams exchanged goals 44 seconds apart to remain tied.                            
  • William & Mary added two more goals to lead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Milana Zizakovic found the back of the net 48 seconds into the second quarter to cut the deficit in half.
  • Luca DeMaio tied the score at four with her 15th goal of the season when DeMaio fired a low shot that beat Wilhelm.
  • Less than two minutes later, Safchuck scored her first goal of the game to give Towson a 5-4 lead. Zizakovic forced a turnover near William & Mary's crease, then Safchuck scooped up the ground ball and scored the one-on-one opportunity.
  • Zizakovic scored her third goal of the game when she fired a shot behind her right shoulder to extend Towson's lead to two with 5:23 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Thompson and Zizakovic each found the back of the net again to give the Tigers an 8-4 advantage at halftime.
  • Safchuck opened the third quarter by scoring two goals to push Towson's lead to six.
  • Katie Roszko scored her 20th goal of the year on a free position attempt to lead 11-4.
  • Zizakovic scored her fourth goal of the game when she ran to the crease and fired a shot past Wilhelm's shoulder.
  • The Tribe ended their 31-minute goal drought with Paige Gilbert's 24th goal of the season to trail by seven heading into the fourth quarter.
  • William & Mary scored on a free position attempt 36 seconds into the fourth quarter to trail 12-6.
  • The Tigers responded with goals from Roszko and Zizakovic to restore an eight-goal lead midway through the fourth.
